Rising's "ZAN-DATSU" trademark abandoned

Posted on November 15, 2011 04:39 am

With the next issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine (UK) coming up in a few weeks and Spike TV's Video Game Awards airing in a month, we will finally find out what the fuck is the deal with Metal Gear Solid: Rising. Fans are wondering all kinds of things, such as the possibility that Shigenobu Matsuyama has been left in a locker somewhere and if the whole "cutting" thing has been, well, cut.

Here's something interesting with regards to the latter. Since the trailer for E3 2010, Matsuyama talked about "ZAN-DATSU" which literally translates into English as "cut and take." Basically, Raiden will cut things and take out parts for some reason. Konami apparently actually filed to trademark the term and seemingly was not opposed when it was published in February of this year. However, they have abandoned it a few weeks ago on October 31st.

What exactly does this mean? I'm not too sure. The fact that they trademarked the phrase seems odd and unnecessary as it is, so Konami could just be doing some really late spring cleaning. Or maybe the changes being made to Rising's development are so huge that this whole ZAN-DATSU thing is being completely scrapped. By the way, for those of you looking to trademark the term, you should be able to buy it for $150. Just hope Konami doesn't notice it when you publish it for opposition.
