METAL GEAR SOLID 2: Sons of Liberty
Nearing the end of production for Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima was already
planning on the sequel. Originally called MGSIII and taking place in the middle
east, Kojima decided to chill the fuck out and instead have it take place in
New York which ended up making the game noncontroversial because nothing crazy
important happens in New York City around Fall 2001.
Kojima did decided to play the audience that was so hyped up for Sons of Liberty
that it could have been everything they wanted but they still would have complained.
So when the trailers and promotional materials as well as the boxart hints at
a typical Solid Snake adventure, players were flabbergasted when a blond-haired
inexperienced Raiden shows up after less than fifteen minutes of gameplay with
Solid Snake.
Ignoring the immersly detailed game world, cinematic presentation, amazing graphics
for it's time, and somewhat free gameplay critics got butthurt that Solid Snake
is only playable for a very short introduction chapter to the story. People
were further angered by the fact that a lot of what's revealed in Sons of Liberty
never gets answered; Who are the Patriots? Some guys. How does Vamp keep coming
back to life? Water, maybe. How is Liquid Snake, who died in the previous game,
channeling Ocelot's body through a fucking arm? French health care. Despite
their hate of a great digital philosophical essay, the game sold more copies
than it's predecessor.
The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2 was released for hardcore fans. Built as
a PS2 "game" it is an interactive documentary on the polarizing title with an
early script, development history, as well as every cutscene with the ability
to pause and move around as proof that they were all done in real-time.
Sons of Liberty was re-released as Substance which included VR and Alternative
Missions, non-canon Snake Tales missions, and Skateboarding. The Xbox port was
released first due to a deal with Microsoft although it was not released in
Japan. The PlayStation 2 version was finally released in the west a few months
later along with a PC port.
Much like the original Metal Gear Solid, Sons of Liberty is somewhat of a cash
cow as it has been adapted to a comic book series (which was released to DVD
with full voice-acting in Japan) and is currently being adapted to monetization
from Raymond Benson who will probably throw in some penis jokes to appease his
preteen audience.
