MGS HD and the European Grey Screen of Death!
It’s been some time since the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection was released (even more time if you live in the US), but the game still manages to pack a special surprise for PAL users. After having to put up with a delay that was set for no apparent reason as well as a lot of other shit, now PAL users can finally get some special treatment, since they have glitches exclusive to their version of the game!
Apparently, if you play Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty on the European / Australian PlayStation 3 version of the game in standard resolution, you won’t get the boxes that show up on the conveyor belts at the parcel room in Strut E. Also, if you equip a box and hop onto the conveyor belts, you will be granted with sheer nothingness (jump to minute 03:15):
Not only does this prevent you from getting to other areas of the Big Shell via the cardboard box merry go round, but it also prevents the game from being completed in any difficulty mode above Normal, since there is a bomb that has to be defused attached to one of the now missing boxes. Also, you can’t get certain items early in the game.
Usershave reported to overcome this problem by switching to HD resolution, but not just any HD resolution will do. The game can’t output in 1080i, so those of you who have their consoles configured that way, because your TV sets don’t support 1080p, will see your game forced down to 576p and will encounter the glitch either way. If you have both 720p and 1080i enabled, the game is displayed in 720p and the problem won’t happen.
Changing to HD is not a fix though, since not everybody owns an HDTV, an HDMI cable or a component cable. Even if the game collection's purpose wasn’t to get optimized for standard definition, it should at least be playable from start to finish.
Even after e-mails from several users were sent, Konami hasn’t still acknowledged the problem, even though it appears in the Wikipedia entry for the game. Thus, there is no way to know if a patch will be released. It should be, if only for the company’s reputation sake, since they’ve been selling a broken, unbeatable product. It also would be a great chance to solve some other problems as well.

I'm so fucking glad I imported it from the USA.
And why the fuck does this only happen in the European version? What the hell did they change in the game, to make this glitch appear, I wonder.

They probably put it there intentionally. Everyone knows Konami hates Europeans.

I would post my "Liquid Snake: Gay or European" video but it's blocked on my school's computer for some reason.

I already sent an email to Konami Spain support (which was useless), to UK support (no answer yet, but I sent it yesterday, so it's too soon already), and now I used the mailform from this adress. I'd like to think that the more people that mail them about the issue, the sooner they will be aware of the problem.
As I told him on this other thread, I was hoping for Ravi to post this as news on The Briefing, since they listened when he brought up the Super Widescreen bullshit to notoriety (they even used the same, or similar, screen captures).
Edit: Thanks for putting this up on the main page. Let's hope it works and we get some kind of response from Konami.
No interest to buy a HD TV and no interest to buy a PS2. My guess.
Yup, it's a long term issue. Sooner or later they will upgrade to an HDTV and even if they don't, the best thing about these HD Collections is that they let the games stay on sale a decade after release and for an indefinite amount of time (assuming sooner or later they'll make it in PSN as well).
HDTVs are very cheap these days, it's baffling to me that there are gamers with HD consoles who have not made the jump yet. Especially if they are playing games with "HD Collection" in the title.

Either is a luxury. Indulging in one can be trying, going for the whole package can be impossible. You get what you can. I don't get what is baffling.
Here is what *is* actually baffling to me, though; not only is the bad about this collection more than the good (in the sense that the good isn't news to anyone anymore), but Konami has done little to fix them (and add the PAL release delay in terms of shitty customer support/treatment). The HD Silent Hill and ZoE collections will be out in a matter of a few months. One of them is a major Konami IP anyway.
But I would assume they expect sales from ZoE, which isn't exactly huge. It's gained a fanbase, but it's a hell of a lot more obscure than MGS and -let's not kid ourselves- even the following it has it largely does because of MGS and Kojima's involvement. If their biggest IP is on a broken collection, won't that reflect badly on the upcoming ZoE collection (and, likely, whatever ZoE games they may want to produce after the title has become better known to the mainstream through the collection)?
Hell, I want the ZoE one more than MGSHD and even I'm reconsidering right now.

I know that they're luxuries, but compared to a few years ago, they're stupid cheap. Looking at the Best Buy website now you can get an HDTV for under 200USD. That's crazy to me. In 2008 I got my 26" Bravia for about 1000NZD (which is around 800USD give or take) and now you can get something that's actually better for 200 bucks!
I'll elaborate on what I found baffling a bit more. It's the people who pay 250-300 bucks for an HD console but then say "I have no interest in an HDTV". That's fucking r-word.org shit right there. I mean, it's cool if you can't afford to buy an HDTV yet, but if you're a gamer you have to be at least saving up for one, right!? That's like buying a Ferrari and saying "I have no interest in putting my foot down".
