Hey, it's Valentine's Day. What better way than to celebrate love than to take away that which has probably given so many single people an outlet to express their rage out on through laggy headshots, teabagging and flirting with people who use female characters because obviously they are female? Sorry guys, its not you, its Metal Gear Online. Maybe the inevitable 2014 release of Metal Gear Solid 5 and its inevitable Metal Gear Online will be your rebound

Jokes aside, this is pretty shitty for those of you who have not only have invested time into this game but money as well--three expansion packs were released within the past four years along with other shit like Codec packs. Speaking of which, all of that will be available for free on April 24th along with Reward shop equipment, giving people like me who didn't think it was worth it to finally see what the hell this SURVIVAL shit was all about.

Then June 12th will come along and that is when it will be over. Can't say I'm surprised or shocked. I have always express my disappointment in there not being an offline expansion to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Offline expansions such as VR Missions and so forth last as long as you own the game and have a working platform to play it on. In fact, here's what I said regarding the servers being temporarily shut down after the March 11 earthquake in Japan:

"...it should be noted that MGO is not going to be online forever. One of my biggest complaints in regards to Kojima Productions preferring to expand MGO instead of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots itself is that, unlike MGS4, MGO lasts only as long as the servers are up."

All of this online stuff ends up getting shut down as it costs money and resources to operate servers. While many want fans to run their own servers so they can keep on playing MGO, barely a handful are willing to actually try to pull it off.

And so, Kojima Productions put the final bookend on something that many people found to be a nightmare. Let's look back at all the good times we had playing it...

The nightmare of the beta... The horrors of using a KONAMI ID... The problems with the DLC add-ons... The massive walls of texts and shit cluttering up the playing field....

Yeah, what a ride... I propose a memorial Soup Clan jaunt with everyone like we did when the game first game out. A final salute to a game that would've been better off as DLC V.R. missions with an interesting online component, set in familiar areas from 3 and 4.

Wow, that's nice Konami. But I guess maybe I'm just spoiled by Bungie into thinking that online games should stay up until half-way through the life of the next generation of consoles,

The chick in Ravi's screenshot looks an awful lot like my secondary character in MGO.
Too bad really, last year I bought the DLCs and it's really fun to play as Raiden - his moves are funny. I've taken dozens of screenshots of Raiden and Vamp sexing each other. The maps are nice too. Note that the date of the shutdown, is exactly 4 years after MGS4's release.

Edited to add erotic:

I'd be upset if the game wasn't dominated entirely by lag-switchers at this point. I'd also say "Boy I sure hope MGO3 carries over some of the good maps!" if there were actually any good maps.

Didn't Konami say that they would bring us all the maps from the first MGO to MGO2 ?
I'm still waiting...

I find this to be quite a bummer. And I'm not sure where all of the comments about unbearable lag and unsporting/glitching players comes from. I managed to have a couple of hours of pleasurable MGO time this past weekend without any issue, and that is not at all unusual for me. I just started playing it again for the first time in perhaps as long as a year, and I was surprised that the game still has enough following to nearly fill a lobby. It seems a shame that they remove this mode when there are still a fair few players enjoying it. Near the end of the era of MGO1 (God bless MGO1), I recall it being exceptionally difficult to find quality matches that were even playable because of the low volume of players, and the tendency of the game's remaining players to either be glitching peniswallopers or just too great at the game for me to have an enjoyable competition. Perhaps my experience has been completely different from the naysayers, but if MGO2 succeeded in improving upon any aspect of MGO1, it would be that even years later, quality matches are still available in sufficient abundance for one such as I to play them uninterrupted. How they reason to shut down MGO2 when Peace Walker PS3's competitive online mode never seems to have more than 7 or 8 players on board at a time is quite beyond me. I suppose I can hope, at this point, for nothing more than another online mode in the same spirit to come along in a few years time, perhaps with MGS5.

TLDR
Well, this is bull.

This is likely because Konami only operates one set of servers per game, and now those servers are being taken away to suit the next big game new IP thing Kojima's working on that will likely have online.

I ain't even mad... I never touched MGO after the Beta. And I still wont despite all this free shizz. Why waste bandwidth and HDD space on something that'll never be useful after a certain date?

^If Splinter Cell fans can work on an awesome looking update to a classic multiplayer mode, I hope Metal Gear fans can do the same.

I agree with Snarf here. We should give MGO a last hurrah before it takes the cyanide capsule.
