Revengance takes place after MGS4, is an action title |
|
Forget everything you thought you knew about Metal Gear Solid: Rising since it doesn't exist anymore. It's time to think about Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance instead. The trailer which was leaked hours ago but finally "revealed" at Spike TV's Video Game Awards left us with some questions, but luckily Konami has posted the official website for Revengeance. Let's take a look at some of the facts we can dig up from the site:
FUCK YOUR STEALTH ACTION, THIS IS AN ACTION TITLE!
Remember how Metal Gear Solid: Rising was going to have stealth gameplay, just not in the way Metal Gear games typically involve stealth? Yeah...
"METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE is being developed through a partnership with Platinum Games, known for hit titles like Bayonetta and Vanquish, and this new development structure promises to set all-new standards for the action genre."
"Reborn at the hands of Platinum Games, METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE pits cyborg against cyborg in battle that blazes past every human limit!"
"The original aim for a combination of stealth and action has also been enhanced, for a more aggressive new focus on pure, exhilarating action."
I wouldn't expect a stealth title from Platinum Games anyways. I also wouldn't be surprised if you get rewarded the same for killing everything in sight, whereas this was actually not in the case with Metal Gear Solid: Rising.
THE STORY TAKES PLACE AFTER GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS
Originally, Metal Gear Solid: Rising was to take place between the events of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
"However, after Platinum Games came on board, the story was changed to take place several years after METAL GEAR SOLID 4 to give them more of an opportunity to show off what they can bring to the series. Cyborgs are spreading at a rapid pace in the game’s world, resulting in earth-shattering superhuman action at every turn!"
This is interesting and may piss some people off considering that the end of Guns of the Patriots has Raiden restored as a human and back with his family and one of the themes is letting people like Raiden live his fucking life as a regular man. Now he's back in war... once again, as a cyborg. Here's the synopsis:
"The main character, Raiden, was once feared as the child soldier "Jack the Ripper" on the front lines of the First Liberian Civil War. Now, his combat mastery is channeled through a cyborg body as the strikes from his high-frequency blade slice even massive assault drones in two.
Raiden is contracted for VIP protection, military training and other duties by PMSCs (Private Military and Security Companies) in a developing country piecing itself back together after a bloody civil war. Little does he know that the stage is set for a clash with an enigmatic force of countless cyborgs."
I guess Rose was getting too annoying for him?
SOME OF THE STAFF FROM THE ORIGINAL REMAINS
Comparing this with what was released during E3 2010 and we can see that some of the same folks from before are working on this. Hideo Kojima is still Executive Producer. Yoji Shinkawa is listed as "Character Concept Artist" instead of "Concept Artist" and what's even stranger is that he is the only one besides Hideo Kojima from Kojima Productions to not have a "KP" next to his name. "Technical Art Director" Hideki Sasaku is now "3DCG Advisor." Mineshi Kimura is still on board, but instead of being "Director" he is "Cutscene Director." Etsu Tamari is "Lead Writer" which means that more people are involved in writing the story. Shigenobu Matsuyama is gone and replaced with Yuji Korekado but we already knew this. What we didn't know was that Platinum Game's Atsushi Inaba is also a producer.
PC VERSION NOT LISTED, PROBABLY BECAUSE IT AIN'T HAPPENING
I was expecting this, but only because I thought this would be a FOX Engine project, with Transfarring enabled for the PlayStation Vita. It could still be, but nothing really confirms this at all and now that we know Platinum Games is developing it, I don't think it's likely to happen anymore. All that's listed are PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. No Games For Windows, which was added to the E3 2010 trailer when they showed it off at Tokyo Game Show that year. So it's either something they didn't care to post or they decided not to release a PC port.
NOT "SOLID," BUT STILL "METAL GEAR" IN LOOKS?
I don't buy this.
"Naturally, Kojima Productions is still overseeing the game’s story and its world, and is also providing visual direction to ensure METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE retains the characteristic look of the METAL GEAR series. Though its exact identity is a step apart from the METAL GEAR SOLID games, the blood of the series still flows within this new METAL GEAR."
Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of blood, but I'm not sure if I see the Metal Gear look. Maybe it died from bloodloss? We know Yoji Shinkawa is still working on concept art, but this is just weird because I'm sure most of you agree with me that the game does not really look like a Metal Gear game. I don't mean the hacking and slashing and lack of stealth, I mean the art style. I even mentioned before when the trailer was leaked that some of the guys look like they should be in a Deus Ex game. Look at this shit.
Remember, in the interview with Official PlayStation Magazine UK Kojima said that he will step in to make sure Rising doesn't goes against everything Metal Gear]"go against everything Metal Gear." Many fans, particularly classic ones, are pointing at this action title as being anything but Metal Gear. Obviously it seems like the lack of stealth isn't an issue. What about the look, then? I simply do not see it.
THE "TRUTH" HAS YET TO BE REVEALED
Hideo Kojima spent his time on stage at Spike TV's Video Game Awards fucking up the English language instead of really telling us "the truth" that was promised, letting the trailer speak for itself. Well, we may find out "the truth" a few days in "The Truth Behind Rising," an interview video that should be up on the official website December 13.

I wonder what plot they'll (platinum games, obviously) be able to pull out of their asses. I mean, I am curious to see what's happened in the world since 2014.

I was actually kinda interested in the old version. Seeing the reasons for Raiden's cyborg transformation, his meeting with Madnar, and the whole Sunny/ Area 51 thing would have filled in some holes... or at least, been pretty entertaining. Now... now we've got Raiden starring in Guy Savage *after* MGS4, because FUCK HAPPY ENDINGS.
