Contributing what? Even if Martin Luther King came back from the grave and endorsed the "movement", educating and inspiring the masses, not a damn thing would happen. The days of public opinion making a difference are over and gone.

The sooner we all accept that there is no hope for change, the better. That's the only thing I would want to "contribute" to this "potentially useful" "movement".

It's not potentially useful, and its not a movement.

What's the basis for your skepticism?

    1. They don't know what the fuck they want, or how to get it

    2. Even if they did, they're not part of the media script, so they'll just be marginalized as always. However, if an obscure Christian preacher decides to threaten to burn a Koran, it becomes a media sensation for weeks, with the President and his Generals are all up in arms and flipping the fuck out. Do you see a possible media/system bias towards what gets attention (ie. one anti-Islamic preacher) and what doesn't (thousands of angry Americans protesting their own government)?

    3. Even if they had a real demand and the media wasn't marginalizing the events, every political faction would want to exploit and co-opt the "movement" for themselves, adding fuel to the already-insane drama of American political fighting.

    4. Educating, guiding, or stabilizing a huge unorganized mob first requires extreme force to establish fear. This is a well known Machiavellian principle, and it holds true. A chaotic group of radicals or reformers needs some bold leaders, but where are the leaders of this shit? They seem to be hiding behind the idea of a "99%"

    5. Political climate has turned anyone radical into a suspected terrorist, and the callousness of politicians to the public is worse than ever before. On a federal level at least, it's just accepted that they'll keep doing whatever they want, without regard for popularity.

There is still the possibility that this whole "occupy" thing will escalate into some important event -- if enough people die, somebody important gets assassinated, or any "real" action takes place -- but whatever happens, it certainly will NEVER create progress.

George Carlin is great, but I really think his political stuff is mostly bullshit. Same with all the other lefty comedians, and god knows there's a LOT of them.

I say keep politics out of comedy, focus more on philosophy. I think the majority of social commentary is bullshit, we all know that the day to day stuff changes with "the times". If you want your work to stand the test of time, you're better off exploring timeless things such as worldviews and human nature. I don't mean to sound arrogant, telling fucking George Carlin how to do his job, but this is just my genuine observation and I really believe it's true.

George Carlin is great. I never laugh at his jokes, but rather take a step back and approach him like he's a modern philosopher.

I'm the exact opposite, I laugh my ass off at his jokes, but disagree with most of his philosophy.

Some of the things he talks about, like how voting only gives people the illusion of choice and how corporate interest controls this country makes since. Corporations are considered people, which, by the way, is complete bullshit, and donate large sums of money to campaigns so they can help get who they want in office. Money is speech, but protesters are getting pepper sprayed and beat for exercising their constitutional right to free speech. Which is also bullshit.

Uh, well I thought this was well known?

Like, do people actually think that protesting is going to change shit? Even the people who go there... like, do they not realize it's futile? It's a social event, an expression of anger, and an attention grab... it's not actually meaningful

edit: Also, Carlin was right about the country being owned, I don't know what all his views are, but it's stupid to pretend that there isn't an elite class of people who make the important decisions.
