TheParoxysm and I have been talking about some sort of hacking project. Originally I joked that we should port Sons of Liberty to Wii, but that might be a bit too much. However, here are some ideas we had, along with some other ones:

Port Metal Gear and/or Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake to MegaDrive/Genesis
Extract Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence and make it playable on PC
Hack Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake so that you play as Ninja Raiden and cut everything.
Make something like Zelda Classic for Metal Gear (or Metal Gear 2?)
Not a hack but: HD drawn-sprite remake of Metal Gear or Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

Is this even possible? Wouldn't you have to work on the whole game from scratch?

Perhaps you can make something like Fight of the Metal Gears, minus the side-scrolling action. You know, with the cutscenes and all.

This would make a great project...

Yup.

I suppose I could, but that would just involve Zerim and I.

If you do a ROM hack to port it, you'll have access to all the resources. If you remake the spritesheets in HD, and merely change the game references to match then you're done. It sounds simple, it is simple, it's merely time consuming.

The porting it would likely take longer than the HD remake. Infact, in some cases it may be simpler to merely remake it altogether in HD granted you had someone to remake the sprites.

Edit:
In a pathetic/awesome hybrid the Subsistence disk was made using the Playstation SDK 3.0.2 which is very old, to say the least. That being said I'm picking it apart as we speak.

Or Ghost Babel, if that's easier.
Either way, I would love it if someone made it a reality.

That sounds ridiculously fun.

It may be a bad thing that I have ADHD in this case, because I've been using the Symbian OS SDK to break open the .n-gage Metal Gear Solid game I was forwarded to. I've also ripped the image from my MGS3 Disk 2 onto my computer and am halfway looking through the files on it. I'm also in an IRC channel talking to a set of dudes I used to do ROMhacks with, and asking about the best method to do this.

Any votes on order?

Remake of MG and MG2...

Using Peace Walker assets!

For PC!

But the most useful thing you could do is get us that Metal Gear Mobile game for PC...

I suppose that's piracy though, but hell... I'll send them a donation.

I believe that as long as it's not commercially available it's not theft.

Side note, the MG/MG2 on Subsistence, through some interrogations and breaking eggs, I have found is actually the exact same version as released for Mobile Phones sometime shortly prior to Subsistence's release. New boss names, and different character art. I assume this also means the superior translation.

Meaning, if we get the copy of the games released for cell phones, we can just play it with a cell phone emulator of just about any kind.

Edit: Fixed quote, actually read what MGS Mobile was about, HOLY SHIT. It sounds like what MGS2 SHOULD have been. Then the first rising could have been what MGS2 WAS.

Are the PlayStation 2 "ports" actually JAR files in an emulator? Other than that, they never released Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for mobile phones in English.

They are -not- jars. The Playstation 2 does not support Java, nor if they were jars would they need an emulator as jar versions we have seen are standalone players.

Granted we have someone that understands Japanese (or are willing to go with Google Translate) translating an MIDP .jar would prove to be fairly easy although time consuming to go through all that text.

The PS2 ports are actually embedded into the dat files. I can't tell if they are self-contained .elfs or if they are run from a mini-emulator built into Subsistence.

I did happen to find a translation file for the MSX version of MG (.ips) and that wouldn't be too hard to port over. I only say this because I've seen that done. Infact it was ported to C64 which means it wouldn't be to hard to move it elsewhere or imbed it into a standalone player (IE: Small emulator that basically just boots and auto-runs MG) MG:Solid Snake though....would take time. I'm asking for shortcuts or other methods, but it's looking like it might be a first-time thing.

Edit: Added a more concise, direct answer.

Well, the official English translation should be available in GameFAQs. Now I guess it's a matter of finding the JAR.

I'm confused. Are you talking about using the IPS file for the JAR? Metal Gear was made available on mobile phones in English and it should be the modern fixed translation.

Yeah, I saw references to a completed translation, but didn't find it. I was though, more focused on the .jar files.

Actually I was referring to using the patch file (.ips) on the MSX version, and finding an equal to MG2, doing the same, then starting the conversion from -that- point.

As far as the .jar there was a MG2 released for cells in Japan. I believe it was on the Docomo network. Any research there would be helpful as really I'm just focusing on extracting and looking over the files from this n-gage MGSM. It seems to just be a .sis file renamed .n-gage, which is weird. I don't have the Symbian OS SDK but I can work on getting that asap.

There's already patched MSX ROMs available. That's how I managed to play Metal Gear 2 before Subsistence was released.
