Half Life 3, Portal 3, or Left 4 Dead 3: Gabe Newell’s Cryptic Message

Now that Duke Nukem Forever has been released (remember that?), and with Max Payne 3’s launch nearing, it would seem that Half-Life 3 is due for a release…right? A group of users from 4chan sent a (very NSFW) email to the face of Valve, Gabe Newell; as Newell always says in his games’ developer commentary, while he reads every email that is sent to him, he doesn’t respond to all of them. Yet, the Gaben responded to this email with: “I don’t suppose it would ease your wrath if I told you we’re announcing all your favorite things at E3 2012?”

The people at reddit sent an email to Newell, asking him to elaborate. His response? “I can see how the wording caused some confusion there. Yes, we are announcing something with a three in it.” We all know that Valve loves to tease their fans, but this is just too much. So many questions can be asked from this statement, and it could apply to so many games: Half Life 3, Portal 3, Left 4 Dead 3, even Team Fortress 3. But does this statement mean only one “three”-related game?

Two websites have emerged: atramental-plateau.com, and black-aperture.com. The “Atramental-plateau” website shows Half Life’s Black Mesa logo on a black background, and highlighting the black text underneath the logo reveals “E3 2012.” The “black-aperture” website shows only “…/3.”

These websites narrow down the list of possible games to two: Half Life 3 and Portal 3. Black Mesa is not only a Half Life reference, but it is mentioned in Portal as well. “Black-aperture” seems to be a reference to Portal’s Aperture Science, but merged with Black Mesa, hence “Black Aperture.”

The fanboy in me says that Half Life 3 will be the game announced at E3 2012, but I can’t deny the possibility of a Portal 3 announcement either. Granted, Portal 2 was just released last year, and Portal 3 would be too soon, but Valve can’t ignore the popularity that the Portal franchise is experiencing right now.

It’s been five years since Half Life 2: Episode 2 was released. That should be reason enough to announce the next installment. The cliffhanger that the game ended on made it necessary to have a sequel, and it would be criminal if the third installment were never to be released. The least Valve could do is to acknowledge Half Life 3’s existence, and that would be enough for the starving fans.

Valve knows that Half Life fans have been waiting way too long. Expectations are soaring for this game, but the wait is getting to the point where fans will be setting themselves up for disappointment. Remember Duke Nukem Forever? Valve is listed as an exhibitor for E3 2012, and you can bet all eyes will be on them. Anything less than a Half Life 3 announcement might be seen as a failure.

They forgot to mention Team Fortress 3 as a possibility. I think it is too early for Portal 3, and perhaps for Left For Dead 3 as well.

I mean really. We've been waiting for the HL3 announcement for a long time, and considering how much they are hinting at it's existence I wouldn't be surprised that it was the announcement. Hopefully we get a trailer too.

I don't think its absurd to think that Freeman could find a Portal gun on the Borealis. It'd be cool to see the weapon applications that you could do. It also be good for flanking and moving in and out of firefights.

i remember a developer said about portal 1 being in the same universe as half life so that gordon would eventually get to use the portal gun. if this is a half life game then we gotta see it

At this point I believe that the release of Half-Life 3 is a violation of Einstein's relativity, and thus it won't happen ever.

Valve Joins EA, Sony, Others in Trying to Block Class Action Lawsuits
http://www.giantbomb.com/news/valve-joins-ea-sony-others-in-trying-to-block-class-action-lawsuits/4308/
Quote:
Steam (and Valve) is joining Sony, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, and other companies hoping to block any and all class action lawsuits. When you boot up Steam this morning, you’ll have to agree to a new set of terms, and that includes agreeing to bring lawsuits against Valve in a a one-on-one capacity, not together.

Your other option? Not play your games, I guess.

“We considered this change very carefully,” said the company as part of a larger statement on the change featured on its website. “It’s clear to us that in some situations, class actions have real benefits to customers. In far too many cases however, class actions don’t provide any real benefit to users and instead impose unnecessary expense and delay, and are often designed to benefit the class action lawyers who craft and litigate these claims. Class actions like these do not benefit us or our communities. We think this new dispute resolution process is faster and better for you and Valve while avoiding unnecessary costs, and that it will therefore benefit the community as a whole.”

“Some situations” of a class action lawsuit benefiting consumers isn’t enough, apparently, and Valve is removing the tool entirely. Unlike companies like Sony, Valve isn’t offering an opt-out clause. Sony allowed consumers to continue having access to class action lawsuits by submitting a letter of intent, though that option disappeared 30 days after agreeing to the new terms. You have no such option with Steam, and must simply click okay and move on.

Valve is, however, offering to front the legal costs of its preferred option, arbitration or small claims court. The company will reimburse costs “under a certain amount” no matter the outcome, even if it goes against Valve, but it requires the arbitrator to determine the claim “is not frivolous or the costs unreasonable.”

It’s not clear these changes will ultimately be enforceable, however. They’ve never been challenged, but by introducing the idea that consumers cannot use class action lawsuits, how many will consider it an option?

“Time will tell on that one,” said Washington attorney Thomas Buscaglia to me last September, back when Sony instituted the same changes for PlayStation Network. “The US Federal Trade Commission and various state consumer protection agencies could have a problem with it. Also, some courts might not allow it to be enforced due to existing state court precedent."

Again, time will tell on this, but I’m bothered by the response by most players to just shrug at this move, as they have in the past. You should carefully scrutinize the reasons your rights are being limited, even it’s by a company who has traditionally been exceptionally consumer-friendly in the past, Valve. There may never be a point in your life where a class action lawsuit benefits you, you may be tired of getting emails about being part of class action lawsuits you didn’t realize were happening, you may not understand why you received a quarter-sized check in the mail related to a class action lawsuit from a few years ago whose email notification went in your spam folder, but you shouldn’t be okay giving up your rights. One day, you may wish that right was at your disposal, and suddenly it won’t be.

Make sure to read all of Valve's statement.

I tried logging on today to play Arkham City and I got greeted with the new EULA. Not sure if I want to agree to it, but to not have ANY access to my games after the Summer sale is frustrating.
