What's wrong with 'monolithic' threads?

I personally feel like locking those threads is not a good idea. Monolithic threads provided a open breeding ground for discussions to be born. The ambiguous, unclosed, and broad nature of those topics allowed different discussions to be generated, often out of statements which are seemingly insignificant. I don't think anyone will be creating a separate thread about matters as shallow as how much they love/hate/etc narcissism, cynicism, optimism and plenty of other trivial and flimsy things as they don't deserve a separate thread (that's just opinion though). Yet in those monolithic threads, some healthy discussions and debate was born out of it.

But I also feel like there could be some benefit, I just can't word it right now.

Isn't that proof within itself that they're not worthy of discussion, then, if nobody is willing to even make a new thread?

I believe while they are too weak to deserve a thread of their own, they are worthy of discussion as the discussions that are born (or derived) from it are substantial and can be regarded worthy of discussions.

And I'm sure if I worded that shitty statement above properly for it to be perceived correctly.

That's true, but look at the threads. We see most of it are just one-hit-posts. If these were individual topics, they would die and that would be it. Here they stay because the topic is so broad that people can bump with anything, even if it's just bullshit to just bump it.

Keep in mind that not all monolithic threads are locked. Only the ones which encourage one-liners are.

That's something I agree with. Perhaps this was the benefit (of locking the threads) I couldn't word earlier, but yeah I agree with this part.

The new rules are fine.

Though it's not like you have to pay or anything to create a topic. There's no such thing as a topic needing to "deserve" it's spot. You either want to talk about it, or you don't. The removal of "monolithic" threads essentially works as a filter that challenges people to only post about what they really want to have a discussion about, instead of just posting random stuff that no one cares about.

The new rules sound great to me. I will admit that I will miss those threads but that doesn't mean you can't make a thread about something more specific. It's not to punish posting but more to promote discussion.

I hear ya. Though a lot of my hates were about my parents...my dad to be specific. Not sure if that can generate discussion.

Well you can very well create a thread about how you hate your parents and what it is you don't like. People can chime in with something they can relate or what not. It'll give it more of a chance to promote discussion and be on topic whereas on The Hate Thread, someone's very next post could be "I hate Popsicles that melt too fast and gets sticky on your hand."

I do hate this. I just threw out the last few bites of one out the car window because of this very thing! And you can't just eat it so fast, unless you like that fucking brain freeze. Mad

I'm going to miss the love thread. Crying or Very sad
But I'll get over it. Rolling Eyes

I actually do eat popsicles fast...mainly because it's icy and I love to chew ice. I know it's bad for my teeth so shush all you dentists out there! I also love the feeling of the flavored ice melting in my mouth. Very Happy

I eat ice too! It is bad for teeth though. I just cant eat popsicles fast cause of the brain freeze. I dont eat alot of them though, we have Ritas Water Ice and I dont eat much of that either and my whole city waits for its opening day every spring. I like ice cream more I think.

Okay, I want to like binge on ice cream and popsicles now. Some Cake Batter ice cream with rainbow sprinkles sounds so tasty right about now. Thanks Julia. You made me crave something so delectable yet so unhealthy. ><

I'm sorry, how does an apple sound to ya? =p

I have to get into this skinny black dress I just bought for a party in Novemeber. I've been trying to stay away from all the crap I can eat like fried foods, burgers and fries. I did buy an apple the other day, trying to get used to eating better things, but I really dont like them that much, but I do like applesauce. Rolling Eyes
