Okay, so I gave Skyrim a go for the first time today. Here's my initial reaction if anyone wants to know:
Some of you guys know that I spend most of my time trying to perfect my visions on game design, core game principles and overall design philosophy are very important to me; and lately I've been reading interviews and whatnot from Bethesda developers about the kind of gaming experiences they aim to achieve. And to my surprise, I've found that our design philosophies actually have quite a bit in common.
Now, the reason I hadn't been at all excited about Skyrim so far was because I don't like the fantasy/Dungeony-dragony genre. I am not at all excited about shit like swords, magic, dragons, wizards and barbarians. I don't like Lord of the Rings. I understand how awesome it is for people who like it, but it's just not for me.
But the design choices Bethesda said they went with in Skyrim got me so interested that I couldn't wait anymore. So today I pirated the game to see how it plays.
I'm going to be fully honest here, no exaggerations at all:
I can't play it.
By that I don't mean the game runs bad or I can't beat the challenges, everything works fine and I'm already finding it easy on Master difficulty, but I literally cannot manage to enjoy the game- because of probably the worst implementation of a game's actual interaction that I've seen.
First and foremost- the controls. Especially the MOVEMENT. What the hell were they thinking? Did they test this game AT ALL? Walking around feels like you're actually just hovering a camera around in a level editor. There is literally NO transition between the WASD keys of movement. When you try to move in a circle by pressing the WASD keys in succession, you only end up drawing an octagon. Because every time you press a key, your floating camera of a character just IMMEDIATELY starts moving in that direction with full speed, no transitions, no animations, no nothing- you just start flying towards the other direction. It is simply unbearable for me, and I actually won't be playing further into the game because of this one thing alone. It honestly makes it impossible for me to enjoy playing the game.
Secondly; the menus. Not much to say here, this is simply THE worst menu system I have ever used. Everything's so unintuitive. Plus, the keyboard and mouse suddenly don't work on the buttons every once in a while.
And the third and final thing, is bugs. It's ridiculous how many bugs I have encountered so far in my two-hour-long gameplay. They just pull you straight out of the game.
I therefore had to quit playing, I definitely won't be buying this game, it's just not for me. Maybe two years later when all the broken mechanics have been modded to hell, but certainly not before someone fixes the goddamn movement.
Just like what I've seen in Fallout: New Vegas; Bethesda had an AMAZING idea, but the execution of that idea ended up being so fucking poor that- I mean I actually feel like I'm playing some shitty cheap multiplayer game or something. This is HANDS DOWN the worst movement I've ever seen in a video game. It's such a shame.
My core design philosophy is; "the player should never be made to realize he's playing a video game".
And Skyrim CONSTANTLY reminds me that I'm playing a game. Sorry Skyrim, you're just the clunkiest game I've ever come across.

I totally know what you mean, and I can seriously see this becoming someone's favorite RPG title. The core design philosophy is rock solid. I seriously just need the neckbeards to mod this shit and I'm sure I'll be drooling all over it.
But one wretched thing about me is that I'm a fluidity and animation whore. Some people are graphics whores, I'm an animation whore. A total sucker for good, naturally flowing animations. They alone made Spider-Man Web of Shadows one of my favorite games- a game that didn't have much else going for it at all.
If a game has that smooth, responsive movement, I'm often ready to make sweet, sweet love to it until my brain can't handle any more. But of course at the other end of it, if a game is clunky and unintuitive, I just cannot get into it no matter how hard I try.
I really, REALLY want to love Skyrim. I want to give my money to it's developers, cheer it's name and celebrate my initiation of love for the fantasy genre.
But I can't do it with bad controls.

I'm going to give Skyrim another go and try to fool myself into liking the controls. I really want to analyze this game. I want to play it. The nature in it is lovely and I dig the outfits.
I just hope someone comes up with a mod that makes the menu suck less soon.
Also; looks like someone made a first person view mod that makes the movement feel a bit more realistic, but there seem to be a lot of errors in that one so I'll just do without it for now.

I caught this yesterday and I really didn't like it. Well, it's pretty cool until the music starts. Then it's like any other Youtube cover of any given theme, with the actual music playing in the background and some dude jizzing all over it with their instrument of choice.
