Kojima claims Peace Walker will rediscover the fun of MGS |
|
Not only does the modest Hideo Kojima brag about Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker being the longest MGS yet, he also aims Metal Gear Solid to rediscover it's fun:
"I am not aiming at old-style gameplay [for Peace Walker]. What I want to do is rediscover the basic fun of what MGS has to offer, and push the limit in a 3D form."
This has to be a translation misunderstanding, right? I mean the word "rediscover" kind of makes it seem like Hideo Kojima himself feels like the series lost it's fun as we have to rediscover it in Peace Walker. I'll go ahead and give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to what he actually meant.
However, if he really does feel like Metal Gear Solid has lost it's fun and hopes that Peace Walker will let us "rediscover" it, then I wish him luck. A good way to find something that got lost is to retrace your steps. Where were you when Metal Gear Solid lost it's fun?

i absolutely agree with him.. MG has become very convoluted with menus, options, too much.. the original metal gears were built with what was happening with tech around that time.. so im sure they put as much into those as they do now.. for the time.. but with advances, and story telling and game play mechanics getting more and more elaborate, a lot got lost.. mgs had a great system.. i will concede that the edition of certain mechanics over time are just natural.. but mgs4 was way overblown with stuff.. too many weapons too many locales too many characters, too much story..
MGS is amazing because its like its MGs before it.. its essentially Snake VS Metal gear, and the mercenary army.. radio back up? sure.. one or two cats stepping in to help out.. why not.. squads of commandos, globe trotting, alternate playable characters? In my opinion this kinda stuff can be left out.. I wanna be in the shit with Snake in a secret base.. odds totally against me.. and SNEAKING is the paramount game play.. No overdrawn storylines about ridiculous happenings to other characters that totally water down whats going on with Snake..
The charm of older metal gear games is that the story was easy to understand, cause Snake is a basic kinda guy.. putting too much into plot points that trail off into nowhere dilute the basic and steadfast nature of Snake.. he isn't complicated, and doesn't want to be.. I liked in MGS1 when he would snub questions from characters about his past, his loves, his family.. quick answers, and pretty much polite ways of saying "who fucking cares." cause that's snake.. same should go for his dad as well.. no need to explain that he and zero are at war with each other.. Simple explanation: Big Boss doesn't like the way America runs its shit.. so he starts his own fight.. patriots, the boss, zero..the philosophers legacy... miller's origins..gray fox's fucked up origins, leave it alone.. these characters are cool cause you don't know where they are coming from.. its like everyone is a wild card, and you neither trust nor distrust them.. backstabbing, double crosses.. they were much simpler in older games cause you didn't really know where a character was coming from.. Now their past is so busy and noisy with numerous plot points and run off sentences.. every time i met a new face, i wouldn't care about their plight, and when they did betray snake, it was a lackluster moment.. Gray Fox showing up in mg2 was great.. Master turning out to be Liquid in MGS was badass.. The Colonel being an AI in mgs2 was a little much.. MGS3, as good as the game is, suffers from to much he said she said, then this guy is evil, but now good, and oh, this organization is actually these people all along.. it started to really get bad there, at the end.. Of course MGS4 ramped it up to complete lunatic rambling.. even if it is understandable once you;ve watched nine plus hours of talking in cutscenes, codecs..etc.. it's still not worth it, because the conclusion isn't memorable.. its too long.. some characters just wont go away and enjoy their life.. or DIE!! (I'm looking at you, Big Boss).. for a bunch of no nonsense badasses, they sure linger on with their diatribes.. kinda similar to the one im writing now.. but I think I understand where kojima is coming from, and I think he wants to take MG back to a more pure, uncomplicated era.. when the mission was clear.. it was you VS the unstoppable force, and the message was about the one man and how he handled his mission..
My two cents anyway..

Or maybe he's shamelessly pandering to the fanbase? I mean, I think it'd be hard to ignore all the complaints about the past few games?

Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of the most critically acclaimed out of all of them. Portable Ops, not so much, but clearly this has nothing to do with that as we already know they're putting the soldier recruitment bullshit in Peace Walker.
I really do think he meant something else and it was a translation error.

I thought it was no more "boring" (as you put it) than, say, Metal Gear Solid 3. But I get what you're saying and somewhat agree.
I hope they increase the difficulty a bit. Maybe give the guards a slightly larger field of vision, though that might break the game (ie the levels were probably designed with the enemies field of vision in mind.)

I think they should revamp the enemy AI a bit, like say adding some "shocker" moments that you'd find in Splinter Cell and Call of Duty 4. When you're spotted by enemies in those games, it's a very sudden, unexpected occurrence, and often times you're not given a chance to evade the enemy's detection before they start opening fire. In Metal Gear, if something catches a sentry's attention, it's like "Huh? *2 seconds later* I heard something. *2 seconds later, walks toward area*". In MW2, if a sentry detects anything suspicious, you hear his radio sound and then he says something (in Russian, of course)....but no matter what, when that happens, you're pretty much fucked, because it's only a matter of time before the musical sting blasts and everyone comes after you and effectively rapes you with their AK's. It leaves you thinking "What the fuck?!" but is that not the challenge of a sneaking mission?
Perhaps this comes into question when it comes to "rediscovering the fun of MGS". But I feel my suggestion will at least make for a more intense experience.

The level design is so bland and uninspired in the game. I'll give the game a chance, but as of right now things aren't looking good.

No, it's not. Every stage is a beautiful, generic jungle, totally different than in any other jungle setting in any other game.

MGS4 was ruined by turning it into near generic shit, don't dare say "COD" or "MW2" again in a light of comparison, or recommendation to any game.
Anyway, Japanese is hard to translate bla bla bla... There is a Japanese word very akin to "Rediscover" so it's PROBABLY right.
Taking that into consideration, Kojima should make the levels more MGS1/2 like. like adding in obsticles/walls to sneak around. there's far to much unused space in alot of the levels, that could be used if more walls and sentries were posted.
