SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 4 OFFICIAL THREAD Subject description: SEGA teases "Project Needlemouse"... Turns out it WAS SONIC 4! |
|
After MEGA MAN 9, I doubt there was a retro fan around that sat back and didn't wonder what other games from the late 80's/early 90's could do with another round in their traditional fashion. Well, SEGA has the answer to a nearly completely jilted franchise that's been having quite a problem finding it's 3D handle in a world where 90's mascots have all but been killed off.
FROM KOTAKU:
"Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay" says Sega of America's Ken Balough. "Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots."
The article goes on to say that rather then a 16-bit remake [like MEGA MAN 9] it will instead be an entirely new game made from the ground up in HD [like TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: TURTLES IN TIME =RESHELLED=].
Don't expect any Sonic goodness in this form any time soon though, the game won't see release until late 2010 at the earliest and more then likely will meet a few hiccups along the way. But rejoice Sonic fans, our blue friends is coming back and it seems people are actually listening to our complaints. Source is in the URL, along with a teaser trailer that really teases nothing but the release year! Enjoy!

From the way they describe it [Daylight Levels from SONIC UNLEASHED, a return to the original Sonic roots] it'll probably play more like SONIC RUSH with the boost system from SONIC UNLEASHED in HD, probably with moments where the action will shoot to a camera behind the main character like it did in S.U., as the daytime levels were heavily lauded for their enjoyability.
Frankly, all they have to do is just make a Sonic game like SONIC UNLEASHED, remove the damn nighttime/werehog/Devil May Cry levels and they'd have the best Sonic game made in a LONG time. Though the character shadowed in the insignia looks like Fang the Sniper from the old Game Gear Sonic games.
The video you posted seems to be a heavily modified version of GREEN HILL ZONE ACT 1 from SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (GAME GEAR). Save that whoever made it exempted the end of the level and placed the end of act ring at the end of the boost tunnel, changed the fonts typeface, and messed with Sonic' sprite and place Sonic 2 background images into the picture.

How can this new Sonic game be good, when the old ones weren't actually top-of-the-line 2D side-view action games? Seriously, the original three Japanese Super Mario games are better than the three original Sonic games.
I will admit I love the Mega Drive/Genesis Sonic games' aesthetics and GODDAMN THAT MUSIC SHOULD BE MY WIFE, but the much-lauded speed aspect is one of the things even the originals never got right.
This review explains my position perfectly.
I still play Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles for the co-op, though. No way I'm tackling that shit alone.

I wouldn't call SONIC 2 a co-op game as Tails always flings off-screen and are you talking Sonic & Knuckles by itself? Because you can't play co-op, as you only get Sonic or Knuckles... Unless you mean you attach it to Sonic 3?

Yeah, I mean Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Since you pointed out a mistake of mine:

Mega Man 9 is not 16-bit remake.
Even?

I never said it was? | Quote: | | that rather then a 16-bit remake | all Sonic games on SEGA GENESIS were 16-bit games. Remake would refer to remaking a game in 16-bit graphics. simply means, LIKE Mega Man 9 was an 8-Bit game remake [using 8-Bit graphics to make a new game] Sonic would use the same idea with 16-bit graphics.
