My account here... |
|
As this has been made public I feel that I have the right to indulge further to clear up the matter.
Last week someone using the IP address that was used three times (out of hundreds) on these forums by the user Otacon logged in as Julia. No posts or PM's were made using this IP address leading me to conclude that this person was reading her PM's. As the evidence was checked upon these are my conclusions:
1) The person did not hack the boards. They already knew the password. It is possible that, if the password is used elsewhere, it was hacked elsewhere.
2) The person logged in as Julia to most likely check her private messages.
3) The person is using a public IP address. Meaning that while it's likely to be Otacon, it's not 100% guaranteed that it was him. Doing a Google search of the IP address reveals that a lot of different people use it.
Anyways I informed Julia of all of this and made damn sure that she change her password. Nobody has logged in using an odd IP address since. However reading this recent abrupt and off-topic post, she seems to be upset that I have not banned Otacon which I normally would.
The problem is this--for starters, even if it is him, banning him does nothing. Banning him means that he wouldn't be able to use his account. He already does not. Banning him would not prevent him from logging in as Julia or anybody else for that matter using their passwords. Likewise as it's not definite evidence all I can do is inform the victim of the occurrence and have them change their password while the log-in system continues to be monitored.
Anyways if anybody has any questions or comments regarding how I handled this issue, feel free to send me a PM or start a new topic in the appropriate forum, "The 'Soup." The next post in this topic should be about Beanie's dog, blindness, etc.
Well, I suppose my response to this would be as I already said., it's okay to ban a member for double posting, but a suspected member can log on as me, and nothing is done of him. Let me just say, In saying that, why the hell should I have ever changed my password in the first place? I just should have kept it, as there is no other deterrant. So then, why ban any of us if we can come back with another IP? Is not banning then pretty silly?
I asked the Admin. on TUS to check the IP, as I am a member there too,.. also it was a match. Is this just coincidence? Then why are all of his posts here and on TUS made with the same static IP? and why me? Why did he not log in as you, or Econs or anyone?
If I had known it was acceptable for people to hack my account and read my personal information, I would not have signed on here. I want to add, nobody was ever given my password, ever. I suppose I had been keylogged, which is hacking to me, and I have been hacked before, so yes, this was serious and upsetting to me.
In my PM box are saved address and numbers and things of that kind. Im sure my friends here dont appreciate that either. My fault for saving them here, my apologies.
But I wonder why ban marv or anyone who never logged on as another? they too have the same oppertunity to make another account and come back, the same reason you give as to why you wouldnt ban someone whos IP logged on as me. That hardly makes sense to me.
And of your explaination to me, you did not explain any of that to me of what you posted, you never told me of google, which matters not anyway once TUS and The Soup matches his IP, of which I told you.
I dont know, as you said, and made clear, you made you choice and protected the one who wronged here, I can live with that, it spoke volumes.
Enjoy the company of Otacon. And I will deal with him on my own.
Thank you.

Well, that evidence is enough for the Admin on TUS to ban someone., and as a member here, and my account being tampered with and nothing to be done of it, has me gone from here.
It's one thing for someone to do something to a member here, but another when nothing is done of it.
If I had known nothing would be done, I would never had changed my password. It just doesn't make sense to me to have done that.
My bigger point is, that evidence is enough, especially to me, and an Admin on TUS who had no friendhip with me, but would be more than willing to ban someone who would EVER use my account.
I suppose this is where I come from most, my heart. My friend. You knew how uncomfortable I was with this, and yet you chose to keep a member who you say you give not a shit of, but by doing nothing, you give not a shit of me either., as friend or member.
On my shit forum, believe me, if I had such evidence as you do, as TUS does, I would glady ban the one who was suspected, especially were there is such a history as mine with Otacon.
You did not take any of those things into consideration. And I know that now. It's fine.
I accept your not doing anything of this. But I felt it right that you know where all this came from, Its not that I expected any special treatment here, just the common knowledge known is what I counted on, and that failed me. But that same common knowledge would not fail me on another forum, and there is the difference. You care nothing of your member, me...and you especially care nothing of your friend.

| Julia wrote: | | Well, that evidence is enough for the Admin on TUS to ban someone... | TUS does things their way, I do things my own. I don't blame TUS as what they did is the easiest thing to do. Honestly I should just ban him and leave this matter to rest. | Julia wrote: | | and as a member here, and my account being tampered with and nothing to be done of it, has me gone from here. | Except something has been done. A script is already implemented to make sure that a foreign IP address that logs in as you will be locked the fuck out. Of course, now that I mention it in public, there's going to be a way around that found. Luckily, that's not all the script does. | Julia wrote: | | If I had known nothing would be done, I would never had changed my password. It just doesn't make sense to me to have done that. | It does. Log-in attempts are logged. Even failed ones. Imagine if we got two different IP addresses--both used by Otacon--should he try to log-in again using the failed password. That would most certainly be solid evidence. | Julia wrote: | | My bigger point is, that evidence is enough, especially to me, and an Admin on TUS who had no friendhip with me, but would be more than willing to ban someone who would EVER use my account. | Except the banning is nothing but a little pat in the back reassurance that it won't happen again. Keep in mind that even if Otacon were to be banned years ago he would still be able to log-in using the same IP address. Now the IP address itself has been banned, but like I said, now the culprit is going to find a way around it.
Ask the TUS admin if it's still possible for Otacon to log-in as you. If he says "no" then he is lying. | Julia wrote: | | I suppose this is where I come from most, my heart. My friend. You knew how uncomfortable I was with this, and yet you chose to keep a member who you say you give not a shit of, but by doing nothing, you give not a shit of me either., as friend or member. | You're asking me to punish someone I am not 100% certain committed the crime out of friendship?
I know how uncomfortable you were as I myself was uncomfortable. That's why I did the research. That's why I spent the time making damn sure if it's absolutely who I thought it was. It's not 100%. It could be someone else taking advantage of our disliking of the guy. | Julia wrote: | | On my shit forum, believe me, if I had such evidence as you do, as TUS does, I would glady ban the one who was suspected, especially were there is such a history as mine with Otacon. | What evidence does TUS have? All you mentioned is that you gave them the IP address I gave you and they confirmed that Otacon has used it before. I said the same thing. Do they have evidence that he logged in as you? If that was the case, then that changes things. | Julia wrote: | | I accept your not doing anything of this. You care nothing of your member, me...and you especially care nothing of your friend. | You're assuming too much and want visual action to be done when, in fact, actions has been taken. Action that will prevent this from happening, creating new evidence should the culprit try again in the future that will likely highlight the culprit 100%. Afterall, what's more important to you? The banning of an account that has not been used since June 10 or knowing that the actions of the culprit will never happen again? Because I assure you, I don't know what TUS did, but here, it's not going to happen again.

You never told me of anything being done, until now. Well, I'm glad, maybe that will keep the other accounts here safer from this shit.
I spoke to you of this, and you only mentioned the evidence was not 100%. I told you I dont agree, your answer was "alright" and you said nothing more until your posting here of the matter. You could have eased my mind earlier.
TUS doesnt need 100% worth of evidence. If anyone logs on anothers account, they are banned.
I know you run things your way, thats fine. I just happen to not feel that its okay for you to ban for double posting, but its okay for someone else to log on my account and read my personal PM's and god knows what else. Somehow that just doesnt sit right with me. Im sorry of that one.
However I think the rest of what you do here is a job well done and a nice devotion to a game you are so very fond of., and like I said, thanks for the time here.
EDIT: mentioning friends meant us talking of this, and you explaining all this to me then, not now...if you did that, all of this would have been avoided.
I questioned your banning thoughts on someone who will double post, but nothing is done and you will keep someone who has logged on as ME. I mean, if you cant be 100% sure its him, then maybe you should be so sure to ban Marv, that can also be someone logging on as him too.,, or any of us for that matter, what is the 100% proof there? Is it not our IP's?

For the most part, only Brandon and I know. With Brandon being absent recently only I know. | Julia wrote: | | I spoke to you of this, and you only mentioned the evidence was not 100%. I told you I dont agree, your answer was "alright" and you said nothing more until your posting here of the matter. | Because the issue you kept on bringing up was Otacon, his response, TUS' response, etc. As a matter of fact, I was not asked of what I was doing, why I didn't ban Otacon, and what I plan on doing until you got pissed off during our debate in the thread about Beanie's dog. | Julia wrote: | | TUS doesnt need 100% worth of evidence. Somehow that just doesnt sit right with me. Im sorry of that one. | Once again, there is a huge difference between issuing warnings for people who have clearly broken the rules and banning people who are suspected of doing so. For example, if someone sends child pornography to someone via PM and both the sender and receiver delete the message but the receiver reports it to me, what can I do? There's no evidence. It's hearsay. This case has some evidence but it's not conclusive wither or not Otacon did it or someone wanted to make it seem like he did it.
Whereas someone who double-posts can actually get away with it by editing the second post to say "sorry accidentally double posted, delete this" which would fit our loophole of deleting, but not punishing, accidental double posts. Otherwise, they're caught as the evidence is right there in front of everyone. Even then, it takes three times to break the rules to do this... unless they are caught using duplicate accounts or logging in as someone else.

Okay. I told you I'm fine with whatever. I broke rules, he hacked my account. My rule breaking is punishable, his is not.
I wasn't aware I had to ask if anything was to be done, my assuming of you was wrong of me, I should have known better.
In Jan, I was hacked and lost all. My MSN, my xbl account, and my G-mail. Its not fun to lose so much. This matter was scary to me, but as I said, no worries, you can deal with my breaking your rules accordingly, and I will deal with him on my own.

People think that IP addresses are literal addresses to one's computer. This is completely not true. If that were the case, based on a few posts made last year, Otacon is Robert.V when in fact this is not true at all.

Okay, then you should not have given me his name if you didnt at least think yourself it could be true when I asked you. My own questions to TUS made it more clear to me it is, and to them his IP is static. Also, you dont know of my own PM converstations that I have with him, and what that does to me. His threats to show people my 'vile' PM's and mine as a minor to show his to the law. I said I can deal with him on my own now, so there is nothing really more to say of this, other than I saying to you I'm sorry this all had to be and turn out as it did.
You may be able to say he did not hack my account, and I explained to you earlier that I did not agree with you. To me, I have all the evidence I needed once I spoke to the Admin of the other forum., of which I told you.
Plus Ravi, you know of my character, and you know his.
Keep him, he is more the respected member here than I.
I just don't have anything else to say. Im out of the words to express anything else, I told you everything, you told me everything.
Months ago when on AIM with you, I was locked out of my account here from someone trying to log on then.
Ive had big problems with these things, as said, I was wrong to assume of you, I know now, so okay, I understand you.
