That cause reviews have been pretty spoiled with survival horror games like RE5 focusing on combat and action more than.... you know, actual horror.

The review also praises SH2 and 3 as the glory days yet gets on Downpour for clunky controls........ That, and he mentions Akira Yamaoka's departure for no other reason because he doesn't have anything to say about Daniel Licht's score.

The game is amazing. Play it for yourself and see.

Curious about that. How was the LP? Did they go through all the side quests and venture into the town more or was this simply a race through the main campaign?

It was just through the main campaign. I doubt the game would have been better if he did the side quests though.

It'll be the first silent hill Ive seen get played through and i was curious if *maybe spoilers?* in every Silent Hill game the places are reminders to the protagonists traumatic memories of the past? Is that whats common through out the games, with no explanation of why any weird shit is happening or why they're there?

Origins was nice, specially as a portable game.

Homecoming was an utter piece of crap, and so dark I wasn't able to see a damn thing (I know Silent Hill games are supposed to be dark, but if I have a flashlight at least I expect to see some shit in front of me).

Shattered Memories was totally great. Not only did it use the possibilities of the wiimote pretty well, but it also had that love for small details that made the first game so great. Posters, signboards, grafittis, specific pieces of furniture... And none of them were blurry or pixelated. It was a game in which I had fun checking stuff and exploring slowly, rather than rushing through it.

I guess I might give this one a try, but, for the moment and judging from what I've seen so far, it lacks the feel of older Silent Hill games. I'm not saying it's a bad game. It seems pretty cool, it just doesn't feel like SH 1 to 3.
If I were to make a comparison, it feels like a crossover between Alan Wake and Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher's Bay

I just finished the game and while there were some things I kind of disliked, there was a lot I looooved. The side quests and exploration is really what makes the game.

How would you rate it next to Shattered Memories? I imagine they're very different games, but in general terms of enjoyment?

It's better than Shattered Memories although it uses the best element that game had.

For one thing Downpour is a longer game than Shattered Memories. I finished my first run doing half the side quests, but if I continued exploring all the locations thoroughly I'd probably be clocking over fifteen hours compared to beating Shattered Memories in less than seven.

Another is the scare factor and setting. Shattered Memories is divided into three sections. A "test" before starting a segment. Then exploration in an otherwise linear route solving simplistic puzzles. Finally a chase sequence with monsters as the otherworld emerges in a frozen environment.

Downpour doesn't have an "outline" as black and white. You experience monsters in the "real" world and otherworld so you're never fully safe in either. When it rains (and the rain is randomized in the town so you never know when it'll happen) the enemies in the town can be more aggressive and show up in numbers so it's best to take shelter. It doesn't stop at the rain since the town will steadily grow darker the more you venture through the streets and alleys. Certain events with rain trigger the shift into the otherworld while you go through the main campaign and during that time you can have some chase sequences there with a specific type of monster. Both settings allow for more challenging puzzles and a wide range of exploration.

In terms of scope alone Downpour is the more full experience of the two.

Thanks to the both of you. I have to admit, I was very fond of SM's quiet in normal Silent Hill (my tastes in 'horror' games have kind of changed recently), but I'm intrigued if nothing else. I pre-ordered it; doesn't come out here until the 30th.

Bought the HD Collection and I'm completely disappointed and I wished I hadn't wasted my money... Framerate issues, animation issues, graphical issues, game play issues, sound issues, difficulty issues... How the flying fuck did they mess up two games that ran almost flawlessly 10 years ago...?

PS3 version? Their FB page said they patched it last night.

This is so aggravating! Specially taking into account that, this time, and unlike MGS, there were PC, pseudo HD versions of the game already! And there were countless delays too! New flashlight? Who gives a fuck! This is yet another flawed, half assed product. I wouldn't be surprised if players encountered game breaking glitches if playing in HD.

Also, they did include the original audio for SH2, but not for 3. As cool as 5.1 sound might be, and as weird as some of the original performances were, the original voice actors were the motion capture actors as well, so their performance matches what their characters are doing.

With the MGS collection, we had Peace Walker and both the original classic games as a bonus. If I bought this one, taking into account that I an play these games in HD via PC already, and found this mess, I would feel anally raped.

I just checked out a video for the Silent Hill HD Collection, and something looked wrong to me...I couldn't place it, but I searched for a video of the original version and found the same scene (was that old guy who looks like Big Boss in Silent Hill 3) and figured it out...

...there wasn't any dynamic shadowing effects in place. What's that all about?

They decided that the former flashlight effect was "not cool", so they reworked the lighting, but they fucked it up good. The shadows cast in the original game were soft and blurred, making them look more natural. The new ones are horribly aliased and jagged. Also, there no self shadowing anymore, so cool effects such as Douglas hat casting it's shadow over his face (something that I really liked in the original, and made my jaw drop in awe back in the day) are gone. No blur or depth of field effects, too.

Yes, some textures might look a bit less blurred (not that much, though), but some of the coolest effects have been lost in the way.

This makes the game even more pointless, since the original one did already look like this on PC:

Look how soft and appealing the shadows of the venetian slides looked:

Look at how Douglas casts his own shadow over his shoulder. Also, the hat casts its shadow over his face:

Look at that insanely detailed texture on her wrist watch:

Yes, sometimes the blur and field of view effects kind of caused some artifacts, but, hell, this was a ps2 game. A ps2 game with depth of field effects, and still, you can see fucking heather eyelashes:

This effect has been lost too.

On high resolutions, the game looked really defined and sharp already:

Yet another example. The lighting was ok, and the image was clear:

Fuck, I even found screenshots as insanely high as2048x1536. Also, take into account that, although some of the screenshots I provide do not show that, antialiasing can be turned on as well.

So, the game had already been released in HD!, and that was without compromising the shadowing effects.

Now, after looking these screenshots, go and check some replay video of the HD collection and check for yourselves how fucked up it is.

Also, the voices. They might have been rerecorded for quality reasons, but now they sound like they don't blend with the audio, they sound over the music and the SFX, they are way too clear. It feels like a voiceover rather than the actual characters saying it. Also, they changed the pacing of some phrases, but the facial animations remain the same, so they don't go in sync with the characters' lips.

Heather was a teenager, now she sounds way older than she is, and Douglas, oh my fucking god. The original voice was the actual voice actors voice, no impersonation! The new guy is so obviouly forcing and faking it to try to sound like the old one! He's like "Durrr, durrr... I'm Douglas and I have a harsh fake cartoon voice..."

Also, even if there's a patch, the very first playthrough video that I checked had serious sound issues. Heather makes this "gasp" sound when about to fall aledge, but on that playthrough seh did it every ten seconds. Music that gets cut, ambience effects that get cut...

With Metal Gear collection, yes, there are isues, but I feel like the pros outweight the cons (three games, five if you count the MSX ones, two of them had never been released neither in another platform nor in PC to play them HD, better controls for peace walker, the reworked textures did work better and didn't change the original idea...). But this one... this one is utter crap.
