I edited my last message while you were writing yours. The flash I mentioned there totally agrees with you. The story takes place in the future, and the characters are talking about games like MGS5. And they mention how the first DMC was awesome, and the others weren't. You should watch it.

Watch the others, too. They are hillarious.

| Quote: | | I don't remember him whining about that. I think Solid Snake whined just as much--except in a deeper ruskier voice--in Metal Gear Solid. |
Well, that was paraphrase. To me (maybe it's just me) Raiden, while a rookie, shouldn't be complaining about everything that his CO asks/tells him to do.
I don't recall Solid ever complaining about having to go get a PSG-1 to save Meryl's ass from Sniper Wolf.
| Quote: | | Ghost in the Shell is a stand-alone film. I doubt the critics read the manga. It's like justifying Queen of the Damned by saying "oh the book makes sense, read it then watch it" (which someone told me when I mentioned how much the film sucked). |
Oh, I'm not saying that you should definitely read the manga/background info before watching the movie. But you're right, if you haven't it is confusing without the background info.
| Quote: | | However, the film's plot still was good. Why does "confusing" or "weird plot" always have to equal "shit"? Is it because people don't want to bother with thinking about what the fuck just happened? |
MGS2's plot isn't "shit" persay, it just doesn't out-right slap you in the face with "THE INTERNET IS SPEWING OUT TOO MUCH SHIT FROM ITS ASSHOLE. ARE WE BAD ENOUGH AI'S TO MONITOR AND DELETE THIS SHIT?" (Which is the "meme" part of Kojima's "Gene, Scene, Meme" thing for the past three games) If it tried to explain what the hell it was going on about, I think some people would be less confused. If you don't pay attention to MGS2 24/7 you're going to miss something and be totally lost during the last few hours of the game.
| Quote: | | There, still, have been positive reactions to odd storylines. American Psycho, for one. However, for the most part, producers will have films nowadays explain-fucking-everything, which they used to do back in the 50's. Best example for a recent film that explained everything when it really didn't need to, was The Number 23. |
Oh, I'm not saying everything has to be on the table. But telling a story has a fine line to walk. You need to tell enough/explain what you're talking about to where people can understand. Then, let them draw their own conclusions. (To tie into MGS: MGS3 and Ocelot being the Boss' child. Of course, this is semi-speculation *unless Kojima has outright stated such and I've missed it*, and so we'll never know if this conclusion is true.) MGS2 tried to explain what the hell was going on... but it was buried underneath two hours of Rose bitching at Raiden, Raiden complaining about his whole mission, Snake talking to Raiden. And then Campbell AI going batshit (which was pretty funny).
| Quote: | | Typing of The Dead. |
Hey, don't knock Typing! It was a pretty damn cool gimmick and in my opinion should kick Mavis Bacon's ass to the door. (The drill "game"/practice sessions on the PC version were pretty fun.

We get it, seriously. Everyone in Metal Gear is retarded. Raiden's a whiny little bitch, Snake is half retarded, Liquid is an old man's fucking arm, Solidus gets sexual gratification from having his eyeballs removed, Fortune is as ugly as Jack Bauer's resume (what? The fucker works one day out of the whole year, then fucks off for eighteen months, and comes back to work another single day. Asshole!), Vamp is evil Jesus, Mantis dresses like a hooker and has sex with men via telepathic mind control, Raging Raven's fuck hole is an electrical socket...we don't give a fuck!
Metal Gear's cast is as fucked up as the crew on Star Trek but without the excuse of being aliens. Care to add anything else? Raiden's whiny? We got that already. Anything else? No, again, you've already said Raiden's whiny. Fuck, I hate people!
Snake: "You hate people?"
Me: "Yes, I fucking hate people!"
Snake: "...you hate people..."
Raiden: "HUH!? BUT WHYYYYYYYYY???" *cries*
(I can go on, if need be. Just remember that that is how annoying you people are!)

But he's not bitching about doing it, he's bitching about what he has to do for it

The "Meme Gene Scene" thing is bullshit marketing spewed by Kojima. It's supposed to be an acronym for "MGS" and was made up during Snake Eater's development. When MGS4 was announced Kojima said "LOL It's SCENE!" which made it "MGS... S!" Kojima then ultimately gave that up when Portable Ops was under development. | Anonymous wrote: | | If it tried to explain what the hell it was going on about, I think some people would be less confused. Once again, how does confusing equal shit? | Anonymous wrote: | | You need to tell enough/explain what you're talking about to where people can understand. That's not storytelling, it's essentially a damn Easter Egg. | Anonymous wrote: | | MGS2 tried to explain what the hell was going on... but it was buried underneath two hours of Rose bitching at Raiden, Raiden complaining about his whole mission, Snake talking to Raiden. The entire plot of MGS2 was a test commenced by the Patriots, to see if a goddamn computer system could recreate the events that happened on Shadow Moses by manipulating people, places, and events. This would show the computer was "ready for any contingency", so with it they could exact control on the entire country, Internet included. However you feel about it, MGS2's plot makes sense goddamn it. It's confusing at first, but after a while all the dots all come together, and Kojima keeps some story parts ambiguous intentionally, like many authors do. I understood it, and I seem to be one of the few who did, and thought it was wholly original. MGS3's plot wasn't a step in the right direction, it was just a different one. There is no true "right" direction.
As for Raiden: The people who bitch about him are more whiny than he is. They're complaining about a video game character who doesn't exist tangibly, that the character model they're controlling and watching partially ruined the game because...he isn't hairy? So Raiden sucked? Imagine if the whiny bastards had to play themselves. Jesus...
Funny how the information contained in a thin wafer of a disk can influence us. Just a small distraction while we get a few steps closer the graveyard, huh?

It makes sense, but when it finally concludes, there's so little to it. It's like a really good, dramatic book that gets more intense as it goes on, and then, on the last page, the main character is about to die...and wakes up. The End. The story wasn't bullshit because it sucked, it's bullshit because, as it turns out, there really wasn't much of a story at all. All this great shit happens, and then at the end, it's like "Oh, by the way, none of that was real. We're just testing the software. Sorry if it fucked with you a little, ha ha."

Fighting 25 Metal Gears and having a swordfight with a man who has dildos on his shoulders isn't much of an ending, is it?
At the end of MGS1 & MGS3, you find out you were being used the whole time, either as a vector to spread a virus, or to kill a soldier who never committed treason.
Any soldier whom is in the military or civilian with a job is being used until there's nothing left. At the end of MGS2, you find you were being used, but by a computer instead of the shadowy government. What's the difference?
