Subject description: Also Kojima complains about returning from retirement of Metal Gear

"In an interview at E3, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has admitted that MGS2 was meant to be his last game in the series, but problems with others portraying his ideas forced him back into the director’s chair.

Kojima said, “Metal Gear Solid 2 was meant to be my last Metal Gear before I handed it off to the team, and the team did actually start working on MGS3, but unfortunately there were problems and it didn’t go well, so I was forced to come back and work on it.”

He tried extra hard to make sure the same problem didn’t occur with the PS3 follow up. “When it came to MGS4, I said OK this time for sure I’m not getting involved so I really handed it off. Because I set two different directors working on it I was sure I wouldn’t have to get involved, but there was a difference in expectations of what I felt that Metal Gear should be.”

Kojima doesn’t seem to blame anyone, though. “It’s very hard to come up with the concept of a game and hand it off to other people, as of course they can’t see what’s in my head. They may not be able to understand the concept completely, or the messages that I want to convey and that’s where things went awry in the past as people couldn’t really understand what I wanted.” As a result, where his his ideas are involved, he’s going to stay in charge. “I decided at that point that if I was going to make a game based around these ideals that I would do it myself, which is why I keep getting involved.”

As well as Metal Gear Solid 5, he’s is currently working on new series which Kojima says is “something more on a human level“, the mysterious Project Ogre and the new Fox Engine. Regarding the last two he also had this to add, “One thing that I can say is that Project Ogre is evolving alongside the Fox Engine. The Fox Engine is at the point now where it is pretty much ready to start making a game, so rather than releasing a sample image of, say, our meeting room, what will be the next sample you see from Fox Engine will be something from Project Ogre.” Can’t wait."

Given how incompetent the team has been with RISING, I'm betting this is precisely why he returned to direct MGS3 and 4, and RISING is actually the first time he went "fuck it" and got Platinum on the phone.

When even Kojima Productions knows a game has balancing issues, you know it's completely fucked.

I don't think Rising was ever Kojima's thing, was it? The team themselves wanted to make it, went nowhere with it and dad stepped in to stop them (it was still his property, after all). Then Platinum presented something better and he let it slide. I may have my facts wrong, though.

This isn't something new, but it's good to have these statements repeated. He has mentioned before that MGS3 wasn't doing well and that's why he returned. He never hid the problems with MGS4's production.

Still, this is good news. He finally gets to do something other than (or at least alongside) MGS. You know, until Konami scraps it again.

Kojima is full of it. Why did he make Peace Walker? There was no need for yet another missing link, and certainly not on the PSP. He makes this because he doesn't know how to make anything else anymore. And Project Ogre will turn out to be some form of Metal Gear... Maybe like Sunny cleaning the Nomad an making eggs, very taboo.

He had a blast working on Peace Walker judging by one of the Koji Pro blog.

There's something to Metal Gear it seems! Laughing

Basically, whenever he felt that he needed to work on MGS, he just did.

He saw that his son and his friends were playing a lot of Monster Hunter. That's the main reason. I don't think he really cared a lot about the story, he just wanted to make a fun game. And he did.

I know this has nothing to do with the Fox-Engine, but I have a gut feeling Shuyo Murata was the main problem, and I dunno why.

@gouda, I thought it was Pokemon that inspired Peace Walker (you know, the whole Fulton recovery system)?

He tried handing off the reins of MGS before and they were crapping it up. Just look at RISING.

Kojima did Peace Walker essentially because he really wanted to. For his son's interest, and also to properly convey and discuss things that Japan was currently dealing with today with concern to history and U.S. Relationships and nuclear weapons, pointing out hypocrisy on the part of Japan for claiming it won't have a military following WWII, nor nuclear weapons following Hiroshima/Nagasaki. However the JSDF does exist, and while Japan doesn't itself possess nuclear weapons, it's quite happy keeping American nuclear subs and carriers around its shores as it's defacto nuclear deterrent. All very interesting stuff if you listen to the briefing tapes.

Besides which he has produced other titles under KojiPro, like Z.O.E., Lunar Knights and sad thing is those didn't take off otherwise we'd have been seeing more of those as well as more encouragement for new project initiatives besides Metal Gear. But the more popular game takes priority, it is a business after all.

I believe the Ogre project is indeed something new, it'll still be a military game with many metal gear-ish trappings but it seems this is indeed a new IP, and likely one that Kojima intends to launch at the close of this gen/beginning of the next generation on all consoles.

What about that rumor that Kojima's game was about circumcised dicks? Something Jewish-related, if I remember right.

What if this is just a plot for Kojima to get himself fired?

Yes, you do have the facts completely wrong. It's been publicly stated by Konami and KP that KP was having difficulties finding a way to blend hack-n'-slash action with stealth gameplay, and thus Hideo Kojima decided to outsource Rising's development to Platinum. Where were you in the past 8 months? Locked up in a lead lined box inside a TEMPEST shielded building?

This is just me asking...but did Kojima Productions actually release a game that they could say (by their standards...or at least Kojima's standards) was successful? Shocked

I mean, it seems to me like everyone in KojiPro except Kojima is a screw-up...maybe I'm reading that wrong...but that's the vibe I get.

You can't have Kojima Productions without Kojima.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater / Subsistence

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Of course those were all Kojima led... Regardless of quality, all those games were successful financially.

The Ac!d games were also done under the KojiPro banner and were awesome, but didn't light up the charts. Lunar Knights was another... There were also other games not released here, like some dating sim thing and I think another having to do with the stock market for DS though I'm not sure if that last one was KojiPro.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow just had KojiPro in name only so I don't consider that in any way a KojiPro game.

The re-releases of MGS were all also successful.

RISING I consider a real joint-development between KojiPro and Platinum. No doubt the speedy development of RISING is due in part to making use of all the assets and groundwork etc. that KojiPro had already conceived that Platinum is taking advantage of.

RISING was originally being made on the FOX Engine before Platinum took over. Project Ogre will definitely be the first game we see on it, and I'm guessing it'll be multi-generational (Vita, PS3, 360, PC, 720, PS4) to show off that KojiPro can do multi-platform right including having the framework to move from one generation to the next without having to go back to the drawing board for engine development with each change in generation that requires more time and money and effort.

MGS5-proper and Z.O.E. 3 should be the next ones lined up after Ogre. I'm guessing MGS5 will take precedence over Z.O.E.

It remains to be seen whether the FOX Engine is only for Koji-Pro or whether other divisions in Konami can also utilize it... I'd hope so, and I'd hope Silent Hill also finds its way back to Konami Japan and maybe even with KojiPro though it seems military and tech is more in line with the KojiPro mindset than survival horror. A new smaller team in Konami making Silent Hill on FOX could certainly be better than giving it to American devs who can't even use UnReal Engine right. At least with in-house engines you have people on hand to help you deal with technical issues.

If they were successful, why all the complaining? Confused

Why is Kojima so hard pressed to get away from Metal Gear?

That's like Miyamoto being desperate to escape Mario and Legend of Zelda...
