Today, I'm giving a lecture at the Languaje School I attend to. We're given a general topic, and we can choose a subtopic. The topic I was expected to talk about is sutainability.

I was playing Peace Walker the other day, and listening to the tapes and conversations regarding Costa Rica and peaceful constitutions, something inside my head sprung, and I decided that I'm gonna talk about countries that had abolished their armed forces and were able to develop thanks to the money that they saved because of doing so.
I did some research and found out that Costa Rica is ranked among the first countries in the world in regards of enviromental sustainability!

And that's something that I love regarding Metal Gear games, and it is that I always learn something.
Regarding Peace Walker, I'm enjoying this new shit around Costa Rica, Japan's non nuclear principles, the JSDF, and all of that, as much as any other aspect of the game.

I was surprised at how many audio briefings there are about random stuff like Che Guevera etc. Then again this kind of thing was in the previous games too to some extent. It starts to become slighty banal when they are plugging Japan endlessly though.

Yeah, it's kind of like, since they couldn't add codec conversations because of cooperative gameplay through the internet, they still added it before the mission.

I'm not that surprised that they talk about Japan so much. It is what the developers are acquainted with, after all. Also, take into account that talking about an army in Japan is still kind of a taboo there. So, for them, going into such detail about the JSDF is kind of shocking.

Oh, I blew my classmates away with my lecture. They were fascinated with the topic, and I got an A. I guess I owe Kojima one XD

I always wondered how this worked in Japan, how do they react to people randomly talking about noodles and Godzilla etc etc?

1.) I found out who Che was (I saw pictures of him before, but I never knew his name.)
2.) Bay of Pigs Invasion
3.) Somoza and how much of a jerk he was to the Nicaraguans
4.) FDR, on Somoza; "Somoza may be a son of a bitch, but he's our son of a bitch." (Then again I heard that he didn't actually say that. Some other guy did.)
5.) The number of nukes there were in the late 90's (never bothered to check on the current numbers. Have they increased? Decreased? Stayed the same?)
6.) I remember an explosive that was said to be designed to not blow up unless detonated. That's C4, right?
7.) Stuff about how heart attacks works
8.) Why it's recommended that I don't play games while I'm on a full stomach, or tired.
9.) PMCs actually exist
10.) So do nanomachines. They're just not as retarded in real-life as they are in the games.

Basically everything I know about the Cold War, I either learned from Snake Eater, Peace Walker, or MGS1.

Essentially, they don't give a fuck. I had a japanese friend of mine that laughed a lot when explaining there that most of what spaniards knew about Japan came from cartoons such as Doraemon or Crayon ShinChan.

Save from 1, 2 and 10, I must say that it was the same for me.

Kojima documments himself so throughfully! With Policenauts, I learned a lot of shit regarding space related diseases, derived from cosmic rays, actual microgravity, and shit. Also, Beyond Coast was based upon an actual theoretical way to build space colonies and would supossedly work!

They did go a bit over the top in Peace Walker, but it makes sense. Kojima's whole anti-nuclear shtick comes from the Cold War's impact on his childhood and Peace Walker takes place when he was a child. He poured a lot of himself and his memories/experiences onto this one and I think that's largely why he kept saying how PW was MGS5 for him.

I had to get a root canal last week and I was loaded up with "anesthetic" drugs injected into my face. I couldn't felt but think of the ANEST. initials for the tranq. ammo in MGS4.

I've heard it still says Diazepam in the Japanese version of MGS2.
