It seems like a netflix box combined with onlive except that you don't stream the games, rather they're installed into the console and it runs off of it. I think its cool if they can make it affordable, but with the rumored i7, 8GB, and a nvidia graphics card that will be pretty hard to do. Also, if it was popular it would lead to a standardization of a PC game specs, and that really isn't a good thing for the PC game market.
I heard it could also have rival markets like Origin on the thing, but we shall see.

Like, the N64 expansion pack/Sega 32X? |
I'm totally down for this. If it can be affordable, I'll definitely grab one. I'd love an insta-good gaming rig.

Umm... who's saying it's a portable device? The rumor is that it's a platform (ie. Operating System) with system specs, meaning that Alienware or some other company would build their own "Steam Box" up to Valve's standards, and then be released. It's all still up in the air with nothing official, and Valve isn't stupid enough to make a laptop. Look:
| Quote: | | the Steam Box is said to operate more like a platform along the lines of Google's Android operating system or the 3DO. In theory, Valve would set hardware specifications and create the system software, but multiple partners (Alienware is one rumored name mentioned in the report) would be able to create their own Steam Box devices. |
Steam already includes a browser, video player, chat, and voice chat, and this would undoubtedly feature a bunch of dedicated OS features. Nobody is ruling out a disk drive and other PC-like features, and . If it's essentially the new standardized PC gaming rig, it could massively help PC game developers to embrace it, driving down production costs and beating the "next gen consoles" to the punch.
All the ideas I've heard for the next generation of consoles are just various imitations of the PC anyway, and Steam is the premier gaming application on the PC... so... yeah.
Also, I imagine it wouldn't be hard for Valve to partner up with whoever they need to in order to implement new features too.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this, but the patents that are being pushed (and hyped) aren't sufficient in and of themselves to be for a complete console, so has anyone considered it a next generation PC peripheral for use with Steam (steam hotkeys on it, steam auto-maps it) to draw some of the console crowd to themselves?

But I didn't mean "a company from the pc world getting into the console business", I meant a "console" that is nothing more than a PC, running PC games.
IBM builds chips used in consoles, not the consoles themselves. The Apple pippin was a fiasco, and the xbox and xbox 360 have dedicated games. You can't grab a copy of PC only Napoleon Total War and expect it to work on your xbox.
The problem I see with a "simplified" pc that only runs pc games is that pc games are not programed with one single machine in mind. Consoles remain the same all through their life span, so a game programmed for them will always work, but the PC market is evolving everyday, and every new game tends to use whichever new technology is available.
For instance, the Playstation 2 was released in 2000. That year, Unreal Tournament was released on PC (actually 1999, but you get the point). Unreal Tournament saw a port for the PS2.
The PS2 has been receiving games up until 2010 and beyond (ports and titles such as Silent Hill SM, Tomb Raider underworld...). 2010 saw starcraft 2 released for the PC. There's no way a PS2 could run that.
Fuck, Crysis was released in 2007 and nowadays consoles strugle to move a heavily downgraded port of it!
Should anyone (not just Valve) release a machine which is basically a non upgradeable PC, it will become obsolete and not be able to run the newest PC games in a matter of a couple of years or three.
But, anyway. All of this is bullshit, since Valve themselves have stated not to be working into any kind of hardware shit.
