Snake Eater 3D and HD Collection at GAMEfest in UK |
|
Those of you in the UK may have heard of GAME. GAME is a cleverly named retail chain that sells... wait for it... video games. If you feel like you're being left out, with E3 and Comic Con being in the west coast of the United States, GamesCom being in Germany and Tokyo Game Show being in, well, Tokyo, I hope Birmingham is close enough because that's where GAMEfest will be held!
For some reason, GAME is heavily promoting the fact that Nintendo and Disney are going to have games playable; as if the other exhibitors which include Sony, Microsoft, SEGA, Capcom, Activision and Konami don't mean shit. Nintendo alone will have Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D playable. I was going to assume it's the same demo that was available at E3 and GamesCom that I played but the press release that was e-mailed to me by GAME has me thinking differently:
"As well as showcasing titles the whole family can enjoy, gamers will be eager to see Solid Snake smashing onto their 3DS screens at this year’s not to be missed event. Set in the 60s, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D sees Solid Snake on his first mission ever on the 3D Nintendo handheld."
Holeeeee shit it's a reboot! No, it's just a ridiculously overenthusiastic public relations person hyping up a game they know little about. Interestingly enough, the press release posted on the actual GAMEfest website is worded quite differently.
"Sorry Snake, but we’re about to blow your cover: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D will also be in attendance at GAMEfest! The grizzled operative is sneaking onto Nintendo 3DS in an explosive remake of Biog Boss’ 2004 mission Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and you’ll be able to head back to the jungles of Tselinoyarsk once more at GAMEfest!"
Okay, I admit, that was a dick move on my part, especially since I tend to find myself making typos often. This person seems even more overenthusiastic but they seem to at least know more about the game. Not sure if they implied that the game takes place in 2004, but Snake Eater was released in that year so I'll look over the implications.
Like I said before, Konami is an exhibitor and according to the exhibitor's list on the GAMEfest website, they will be showcasing the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. What this exactly means is unclear, but I wouldn't doubt that you will at least get to play the Peace Walker HD demo. Would be cool if they also include the Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD demos that are going to be playable at Tokyo Game Show, but that's just wishful thinking.
GAMEfest tickets are available for £10 for those over the age of twelve online through their website or through most GAME locations. The catch is that you need to also be a member to their rewards club which is £3 for a lifetime membership. They are non refundable and nontransferable though so make sure you can make it to the NEC Birmingham between the 16th and 18th of September. Of course, if you can go to Tokyo Game Show, that would probably be a better idea.

To be fair, they did already mention some of the other big names in the previous news stories, with Playstation being their sponsor and Activision and Bethesda getting seperate stories.

GAME though ... yuck.

I have bought my ticket to this, hopefully I'll get a good hands on preview for the games but you never know.
UPDATE
Okay, so I'm a few weeks late for this but better late than never.
I managed to get a hands on preview for both PW HD and Snake Eater 3D. I know Ravi has written a more in-depth preview (and most of us have played the original games so know what to expect) so I'll be brief and if anyone wants to know more, they need only ask.
Thoughts on Snake Eater 3d:
-Crouch-walk and over shoulder aiming really benefits the game, you feel a lot more like the slick infiltration expert that Snake is without having to stop and aim/crawl all the time.
-3D was pretty good, I don't usually like 3D but the way the 3DS makes it feel as though you are looking through a window into another world is very cool.
-Gyro-Sensor was rather difficult to use. It occured during the suspension bridge during the virtuous mission. It made me feel a bit less cool after doing the classic "shoot the beehive to make all the guards run away" trick, to proceed to fall off the bridge a lot.
-Radio Screen looked pretty cool. It's essentially the same as the original, but the touch screen lists your contacts with (If I remember correctly) the image of the character in shinkawa art.
-Overall I was impressed with what I saw, and look forward to it's release.
Thoughts on Peace Walker HD
-Pretty much just a (mostly) upscaled version of the PSP game. It played great, although it was a bit of a mindfuck playing it on the 360, once I got my head around it, it felt very comfortable what with the second analogue stick and all. I was slightly disappointed that Snake's character model was only upscaled, and not replaced with the more detailed version that we saw in PW's real time cut-scenes, but it doesn't really matter. I loved the PSP version so I am looking forward to this one also.
