Kojima backs super widescreen cutscenes in HD Collection
Oh no, here we go again. After Kojima Productions' Sean Eyestone hyping up the messed up aspect ratio for the cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in HD as "super widescreen," Hideo Kojima defended it on the same grounds in a recent Tweet, as translated by Marc from Junker HQ:
"HD version of MGS2. Game is now hi-res, and the screen is extended horizontally, allowing you to see more of the action. I think the quality of the subtitles do a good job of showing that this is HD."
However, the argument that they did this to let everyone "see more of the action" is a fallacy because if this was really the case, why have any letterboxing at all? Why don't they extend the top and bottom in order to let us see even more of the action? The logic behind the argument also gets further diluted when you take into consideration that the cutscenes in the original PlayStation 2 versions were not in this aspect ratio. We were not meant to see "more of the action" because if we were, it would have been visible in the original.

so what will happen to the intro videos? or the live action sequences that appears near the end of both games, is just going to be a little video square surrounded by darkness?? are they going to upscale the videos making them pixelated? or just to save them the trouble and just remove the "forbidden" intro video, what will happen to the snake eater intro?? or the live action new york stuff?? snakes ending monologue anyone?
seriously i can't believe this, some stuff will look pretty awkward specially since not all characters are not animated because you only see on leg or something, now imagine when they got near walls, you'll see the exterior of big shell clipping and doing some wierd shit.

that's a very good question. you got me curious too. i'm sure that has come to their attention. its going to make the game look awkward with have those clips not matching the ratio of the other cutscenes

Call me optimistic, but I'm sure they'll fix every noticeable problem that would other wise leave people scratching their heads in disbelief as to what the fuck they just saw. I'd be really surprised if this ends up being a complete mess.

This. If Kojima is fine with it I don't really care. Authorial intent, etc. etc.
Good point about the live-action scenes. Do they still have the footage? Can they wide-screen it or was it shot on 4:3 cameras? I'm still not sure how bad this is about the rest of the cutscenes. I'll need to see something that's not a still.

How do you feel about George Lucas?

Considering the original versions of the MGS trilogy are still widely available I'd say it's a weak comparison. Also there is a big difference between the framing of shots and adding in things to your movie/game/whatever that weren't there to begin with. Additonally, I trust Kojima more than Lucas in terms of authorial intent. By that I mean I think Lucas is a fucking liar who only wants money.

well maybe kojima isn't a mony whore, but konami is, even i think this HD bs is pretty rushed, the lack of videos (kojima loves trailers and he always edits them himself, not some brat sucking at the game) and that E3 stunt they made like...
KONAMI: do you have something Rising ready?
KOJIMA: Nope, just a wall ful of drawings and a few models, maybe this winter...
KONAMI: how about mgs 3ds?
KOJIMA: we have a trailer with yoshis, but we need to delay it because textures looks like a blurry cluster fuck... you know we just decided to port the old game
KONAMI: listen to my you little fuck, you told us that porting the game will have the game NOVEMBER 2011 COMING! that's why we canceled the new version!! WE NEED TO RELEASE SOME MAJOR MGS THING this year or stock value goes down
KOJIMA: and pw hd?
KONAMI: NOt enoght we need to charge now, create a physical disc with more shit
KOJIMA: if we port mgs2/3, it only takes a few mon..
KONAMI: $$$$!!! perfect let us call MEGA64.
KOJIMA: the fuck!?
next week they made a video and some powerpoint cards, and just for making the interview last longer they presented the FOX engine, not a bad thing but everything feels pretty rushed, I can't believe they didn't tie this to the MGS2 10th anniversary!... i mean they put MGS1 on psn on its 10th
