GC11: Wait, are Peace Walker HD cutscenes low resolution? |
|
Oh fuck. I just had to find something to bitch about for the HD re-release of Peace Walker, didn't I? As you may know, the cutscenes for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in the HD Collection keeps the PS2 version's letterboxing, creating a ridiculously wide aspect ratio. You can read my original rant and my recent one based on the GamesCom screenshots for more information. Speaking of GamesCom, as I reported earlier, more Peace Walker HD screenshots were released. I can't believe I didn't really notice this one:
Looks fine, but look at the full 720p image or let me crop it so you can see the "detail."
This is a low resolution image. The text is definitely high resolution (or at least looks good enough), but the artwork itself is not. I'm not sure if this can be fixed though as the game was developed for the PlayStation Portable. At the same time though, high resolution screenshots of the cutscenes were released to promote the PSP version. Click on them to see 1080p versions.
So I'm not sure what to expect, really. Maybe the cutscenes were never high resolution and they simply made a few high resolution screenshots for promotional purposes. Hopefully they were made in high resolution but they just haven't gotten around to putting them in like that. Worst case scenario is that they could make the cutscenes high resolution, but are too lazy to do it or figured it would be too costly.

HD crappyness, i think they're just using a emulator, thinking about it on pw some cutscenes are mpg and others are runing in a 2.5D engine... which leaves the question: since konami didn't have mgs stuff to sell this year they came up with this HD thing a few weeks before E3? didn't they made the artwork cutscenes on hi-res because they knew the game was to be ported to home consoles a few months after release? besides a few gameplay videos of pw, and a bunch of "official" pictures of the previous games we haven't seen anything in motion, not even a trailer like ico/SotC, God of war, etc. and hideo riks trailers, so this is fucked up!!
and then they got the false advertising: "updated textures" seriously i hoped they could use hi res textures on pw, but no they just set the antialias higher:
why not use the original artis source files? I don't believe in this current age they'll made 50x50 pixel textures firts, they might be downgraded for the psp while making the game, not the models, at least they should have used the hi-poly snake during gameplay, I mean you use it on the tutorial level

Of course they were not natively HD, but like the other dude said, the HD is a standard, the source material must have been produced in HD, and then converted into lower resolution for it to fit the UMD and because of the limited capabilities of the machine.

This. You'd think they'd have the original renders for the movie in super high resolution and instead Advent Children Complete was 2/3 upscale. =/
Wouldn't be surprised if Konami doesn't have HD art for this either.
I mean, of course the original source images for the cutscenes must have been way higher resolution than that of the PSP screen.
Let's hope this isn't final...

Honestly guys, I don't think they're editing the game at all. I think they're taking the last stable build for PSP and just moving it to PS3. Only minor changes are needed to most of the code to make it run there.

^ Hey, I welcome the HD ports. I have to keep a CRT TV around just to play these games without my eyes bleeding and I don't even watch TV. And the XBOX release is a pretty big deal. I even welcome the Peace Walker port on the PS3 (crappy cut-scenes and all), if that means I can get away from the shitty PSP speakers that sound like the system's constantly at the bottom of a lake.
It's not exactly MGS5, but it's better than letting the games disappear like MGS1 had for so long.
