Interesting article, makes me look at Matrix in a different way. Kind of what happened with MGS2.

Thoughts?

Well this a little late, but I could have liked the final part a lot more if it didnt fall flat as an action film and didn't sideline Morpheus so much and bring in random newcomers that have no depth. The plot itself is another story, and while it's certainly interesting, I couldnt tell at the time whether it was complex or just badly told. Years since I watched these now though, but the sequels had bigger problems in them than just the storyline.

I've always thought that the themes in the last part of Revolutions threw too many people off.

What surpises me is how similar Revolutions' situation is to Metal Gear Solid 2's. Everyone wanted Neo to fight millions of Smiths until he beat them all (in other words, be badass). Everyone wanted MGS2 to be TEH PERFECT SOLID SNAEK EXPERIENCE LOL HES SO BADASS.

Both works of art end up doing different things to what is expected, and they do it with good reason.

Actually, a lot of people consider Matrix 2 to be not nearly as interesting as Matrix 1 because Matrix 1 introduced the Matrix and the characters, the first half hour of the movie was really, really great.

It had the introduction effect.

Matrix 2 is actually my favorite, despite what people say.

Edit: Without the sequels, stuff like the Oracle would not make any sense at all.
And the Oracle is really one of the greatest characters in the movies.

I like how she represents determinism

I dunno, the 2nd always feels so bloated - like many others without the studio pressure from creating a new unknown release forgot what it was to make a well paced movie with a sharp script. And the budget increase still failed to make the 100 Smith fight look real. The original will always be best even if they are riffing from Dark City because its perfectly storyboarded, with limited running time they told a better story. And I liked not knowing what the Oracle was, it had little mysteries in there without feeling convoluted.

Yeah, because people can totally leap buildings and bend their backs to dodge bullets in real life.

When have we expected anything on the Matrix to look real?

I think he meant graphics-wise, not realism wise. Because really, if you look at some of the scenes the characters look too obviously computer-generated.

Oh, that's what he meant.

Yeah, he's right. It still looks good for a CG animation, though.

Yeah the CGI was really bad in the 100 Smith's fight.

It wasn't bad; it was just CGI. Computer-generated stuff would never look as real as the actual shit being filmed in live action, but the W bros went with CGI probably because it was easier to use to film the Neo with Metal Pole vs 100 Smiths part and others.

Yeah, what I'm talking about is badly made digital doubles. They should have tried harder to make a sequence that used more actual doubles rather than creating one that had so much pole twirling and whatever where the CG cape stands out like hell. Compromise to achieve a better end result. Something I hate in movies generally - deciding to be stubborn and not change things when the effects dont work out.

I thought Smith was computer generated.
