+ Praised the non scripted sequences that can occur at any point in the game
+ "It is, unquestionably, my favorite Metal Gear to play..."
- "...though I do wish its story delivered as many memorable moments as its sandbox empowered me to create for myself."
+ The pure scope of the game feels almost overwhelming at first glance, but turns out to be a well oiled machine with a well integrated set of tools at your disposal.
+ Day/Night cycle really opens up your options and allows you to complete a mission any way you please
+ "you’re free to solve [every bad situation you find yourself in] your own way because of how flexible Phantom Pain’s core gameplay is."
+ "[Reflex mode] gives you the freedom to take calculated risks with room for exciting mistakes."
+ Unlike Ground Zeroes, you don't feel an absolute need to go non-lethal, as the scoring system doesn't punish you as harshly for killing. However, while your score might not tank from killing, he says he did feel like there was a punishment for killing, since each soldier on the field and every vehicle or resource is a potential asset for your army, so each kill is just missed potential.
+ "There's an outrageous number of guns, gadgets, and abilities to unlock... and many require you to meet several criteria to snag them"
+Compares the Outer Ops mode to XCOM, and adds that this all has a meaningful impact when you're out in the field yourself.
+Base building and soldier placement is more fleshed out than Peace Walker
+Each base on the map has a reason to be there. There's no filler.
- Story opens well, but by the end feels rushed and unsatisfying.
- "The Phantom Pain brings up topics like the personal cost of revenge, child soldiers, and torture to name a few, but it has positively nothing to say about any of them other than that they exist"
+The story elements are well produced, however, with beautiful cinematography and voice acting
- Snake barely talks
- "Almost gone are the off-topic codec convos, climactic boss battles, and memorable character moments of Metal Gears past. Everyone seems to exist solely to walk on screen, deliver information, and then stand there dramatically."
+ Except for Quiet
- But that outfit. Ugh.
+ The underwhelming story didn't take away from the overall fun of the game
+ FOB system is a game of either arming yourself to the teeth with WMDs, or disarming those of others
+ The game is more about the stories you create in the sandbox than the story Kojima authored

+ Fans of the series will feel much more rewarded than newcomers
+ Praises the cinematography and voice acting
- Very little humor in the story
+ Stays grounded in reality when need be, but goes off the deep end when appropriate, to great effect
+ Controls are incredibly responsive
+ Good balance of stealth and action
+ Reflex system is cool, but can be disabled
+ If you really screw up you can call in an airstrike which will severely hurt your ranking
+ There are caves which are like gigantic mazes that are nearly impossible to navigate and can be heavily guarded
+ There are tools for every situation. You never know when you might find yourself facing off with a tank
+ Story is well paced
+ Over 100 side-ops
+ Reiterates IGN's point about going non-lethal rewarding you with valuable soldiers and resources
+ No place is safe
+ Base building is great
+ The bigger the base, the more soldiers you can house
+ "Some minor activities to engage in while on base"
+ Buddy system is great
+ Praises the story, especially when pieced together with the rest of the series
- Replaying some missions on higher difficulties is required
+ Best game in the series

Score: 10/10

+ Puts story in the background, emphasizing gameplay
- Key story information is contained in tapes, making some plot developments seem to come out of nowhere
+ Story was great..
- Ending was underwhelming, leaving the player with more questions than answers
+ "a staggering number of missions"
+ Finished the story after around 45 hours with plenty of things left to complete
- Traversing the open world isn't as easy as it could be, with fast travel systems not explained well
+ Experimenting with different tools and weapons is satisfying
+ "your buddies function more to support your playstyle than to dominate the battlefield"
+ "The Phantom Pain rarely assumes you have particular weapons and equipment, so the missions are brilliantly designed with multiple paths to success"
+ Improving Mother Base is what drove him through the game, not the story
+ FOB mode is fun and completely optional
- Occasional texture pop-in
- Kiefer speaks so infrequently that the VA switch seems unnecessary
- Some contextual commands are finicky

Score: 9.25/10

+ The "crowning jewel" of Kojima's career
+ One of the strongest narratives of the series
- A few unexplained plot elements
+ "I have never been as emotionally affected by any piece of entertainment"
+ "The Phantom Pain doesn’t get wrapped up in making the player feel 'cool,' never going against the game’s overall anti-war theme"
+ The lack of long cutscenes and codec calls helps to further immerse the player in the world
- However, the lack of exposition leaves plot holes very noticeable
+ The game world reacts to your actions, making you pay for your mistakes down the road with better armed and protected soldiers in a base you assaulted
+ The level of detail present makes the world feel truly alive
+ It's possible to make mother base absolutely massive, requiring more staff and resources to maintain
+ Soldiers on base will comment on new acquisitions, as well as the player's appearance, making you feel connected to your home and your army
- FOB mode is interesting, but flawed
- Can sometimes feel intrusive when it interrupts a story thread you're engaged in
- Not participating in FOB mode can limit your resource gathering
+ "the most realized open-world stealth game to date"
- Being developed as a cross gen game may have limited the graphical fidelity of the game

Happy to do it. There are some reviews with some subtle, but telling, references to major plot details, namely Gamepot's. There's others that are dubious at best so I'm avoiding mentioning anything about the plot besides whether these outlets enjoyed it or not. That being said, there's nothing below a 9/10 so far, so it's looking good.

+ Everything is well planned, with very little wasted time
+ No codec. Radio is seamlessly integrated with gameplay
+ No more monologues
+ Plenty of lightheartedness and Easter eggs
+ Gameplay is more grounded, with hints of Splinter Cell, but with a Kojima twist
+ "It's still Metal Gear all right"
+ Only took a few hours to fully acclimate to the huge shift in gameplay from previous releases
+ "Fun to play almost at all times"
+ Nearly every situation can be approached in multiple ways
+ Deep customization
+ Exploring Mother Base is rewarding
+ 40 hours to finish story
- Not one of the reviewer's favorite entries in the series, story-wise
+ Does a good job of closing up storylines
- Plenty of backtracking late in the game
+ Microtransactions never feel necessary

+ Extremely ambitious in every aspect
- Not friendly to newcomers

+ Cassette tapes are vital to the story
- Plot left the reviewer "feeling hollow"
- Quality of writing isn't always great
- On plot holes: "It’s as if the Phantom Pain has more to say, but gets abruptly cut off"
+ "Although it uses the same control setup as Ground Zeroes, you’re given so much more freedom as a player"
+ Fulton balloons add a new layer to stealth
+ Key objectives can change mid-mission, forcing you to adapt and devise a new plan of action on the fly
+ "Each buddy suits a specific sort of playstyle, and choosing one means sacrificing something else"
+ Taking the time to scavenge and upgrade tools will result in difficult missions becoming more manageable
+ Enemy AI is very sophisticated
+ " Phantom Pain requires constant improvisation"
+ Boss battles are good, but less personal than in previous releases

- Mother Base feels "sparse and lifeless"

Gamespot missed the point, This game isn't meant to be humorious, its the fall of Big Boss, it's supposed to be as trumatic as possible...

Something is telling me the story is told through tapes rather then cutscenes, and some of these reviewers have missed that point.

Fuck, Daggamuffin is what I'd call a true patriot. Thanks, bro.
Story seems divisive enough to be interesting.

This is my signature. Like you give a fuck.

+ Not fatigued from playing many hours of the game in one go
+ Played for 54 hours. 49% total completion
+ You can S-Rank a mission without completing all the tasks
+ Customization is great
+ You can take parts off one gun to put onto another to create new guns
- Story isn't amazing
- "This game lacks 'The Metal Gear moment,' referencing stuff like changing controller ports for Psycho Mantis, or Otacon kneeling over Sniper Wolf's body.

- Snake was essentially a silent protagonist

The IGN score was to be expected, but unlike with MGS4 at least they're honest about the shortcomings of the story this time around.

So the general consensus... story is a let down, gameplay is the best in the series. Not sure how I feel about this.
