Kojima gets Edgey
New Edge interview with Kojima. Good stuff.

- There's still lots of secrecy surrounding the new Kojima Productions because of fears of litigation from Konami.

- New hirees are even keeping their identities a secret because of fears of Konami. They don't want Konami to know they're working there.

- Kojima's process of hiring goes on an as-needed basis when he needs something done. This is different from when he used to work at Konami where instead of taking time off to know what he was going to do next, he had to immediately come back and start continuously giving people tasks to do as soon as they got back from vacation after shipping a game. Now he can take his time and plan ahead and get people when he requires them.

- Unlike at Konami, Kojima is thankful that he doesn't have to waste time attending meetings and being concerned about things other than the game he's making.

- Kojima gets silly with his games story beats on purpose to shake things up and provide relief to the player, considers games different form films because games take longer to play and therefore he sees such breaks as necessary to keep things from staying too serious.

- But Kojima also wants his games to have serious messages that will remain with the player when they're done with a game.

- Kojima doesn't feel like he is a celebrity. He feels more like an author, where the product (a book) is more front and center than the creator.

- Indie games are for babies, Kojima wants to make big games like a Top Dog, otherwise he'll go make movies. Not Big Ubi-Open World games though... those are for a Big Boss. Kojima just wants to be a middle sized dawg.

- Kojima is aware of all the PC bullshit going on in the games industry and doesn't care to follow white-guilt-femineminem-representation-life-matters trends. He'll do whatever he wants. Fuck y'all SJW Mofos! #CANTTOUCHTHISCANTSTOPWONTSTOPTHISTRAIN

RE: Kojima gets Edgey
The best BS I've heard Kojima spout in years. At least it all sounds good up front.

RE: Kojima gets Edgey
Has Kojima ever released a film? Even a short one? TPP's cutscenes made me question if he's more than just a glorified "anime director". Also did he take notes from Twin Snakes because half of cutscenes have slow motion? Including Mission 51.

RE: Kojima gets Edgey
He released MGS4. That's a film. A shitty sci-fi anime one.

RE: Kojima gets Edgey
Is Kojima fultoning Konami Staff members?

Some commentors on MGI pointed out the following...

Full Options Wrote:Ok, did a little linkedin survey and here are 2 R&D ex-Konami staff that Boss managed to ex-filtrate :
- Jackie Tan, level designer on GZ+TPP works now for new KojiPro since January.

- Yasuhiro Kawakami, Cinematic Artist (pretty senior one Big Grin) on TPP works now for new KojiPro since March.

One last thing weird is that Junji Tago is apparently not working with KDE anymore, but still stating "Technical Director" since March... Big Grin He hopefully joined Koji-Pro with Kawakami-san... The same goes for Akio Sakamoto, just stating "Tech dir" since December...

Junji Ito still involved? Seems plausible...

Well if you want to check out the HideoTube videos where Kojima talks films, he obviously does have an understanding of film-making and direction.

If you're going to be making sommer-saulting action scenes with ballerinas and other crazy shit, it's far preferable to have slo-motion than some shaky cam cutting shit.

Also least we forget the slow-motion is also tied into an actual game mechanic for when you're spotted and have a brief moment to react. So Kojima maintains this same consistency style for cutscenes as well as in gameplay. He likes toying with game mechanics themselves by incorporating them more inclusively in dialogue as well as cutscenes.
