METAL GEAR SOLID 4: Guns of the Patriots
Forced back into game development of a new Metal Gear title, HideOLD KOJIMA
wanted to keep away as much as he could but he got scared by some death threats
from people living in their mother's basement and took on the writing and directing
roles as per usual.
The gameplay borrows elements from previous games and improving them such as
real-time camouflage and throws it in a modern third-person shooter control
scheme which makes sneaking and shooting easier than before, but going against
walls and throwing grenades unnatural. This game probably has the most amount
of weapons in any Metal Gear game, which is suitable I suppose as the game is
called GUNS of the Patriots even though that is revealed as a timid plot device.
Even more unlike previous titles is the lack of backtracking for the most part.
The game is very linear and is cut into five chapters which take place around
the world.
Sons of Liberty was never meant to have a sequel, so when said sequel is made,
holes are filled with answers that lack creative juice. Guns of the Patriots
has it's good moments but storywise it feels like a copout. Players are put
in the sneaking suit of Old Snake, who's pretty much an overage Solid Snake
who lost the spark he had in Sons of Liberty and really just wants to sleep
and not eat eggs from a loli. Nearly everyone who is still alive--and a few
who are dead--in the 'Solid series make a grand appearance as well possibly
to appease every kind of fan except for fans of Nastasha Romanenko. Fuck her.
Despite this, Guns of the Patriots is still a Solid title in the series considering
it's gameplay. Unfortunately unlike previous installments in the 'Solid series,
Guns of the Patriots has yet to see an expansion or special edition re-release.
Kojima Productions threw the core version of Metal Gear Online on the disc,
had Metal Gear Solid 4: Database, an in-game encyclopedia, available for download,
and releases a spin-off that can only be described as a touch-shooting flash
game for iPod Touch/iPhone called Metal Gear Solid: Touch. Expansions are made
to the online mode, the new Metal Gear Online which mocks Guns of the Patriots
by taking the great gameplay and displaying it's sluggishness in an online multiplayer
environment. One year after the release of Guns of the patriots on June 12,
2008 there have been three expansions to Metal Gear Online as well as a port
to arcades called Metal Gear Arcade, and no new offline expansions for Metal
Gear Solid 4.
