METAL GEAR SOLID 3: Snake Eater
Despite Sons of Liberty being a conclusion to the Metal Gear series, it's
top sales had Hideo Kojima stuck with having to produce a sequel. Not seeing
the point in making a sequel to a game he meant to be a conclusion, he wrote
out a prequel and asked his development team if anybody wanted to do the rest.
Nobody raised their hand.
Nonetheless, Kojima had fun working on Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater by having
it take place in his favorite era--the 1960's Cold War. Heavily influenced by
the Sean Connery James Bond films, Kojima threw Snake--Naked Snake, as in not
Solid Snake--into an Eastern European jungle with an empty stomach and a backpack
full of random shit.
This Snake who loses his right-eye later in the game and grows to become Big
Boss (don't tell anyone!) has to hunt for food and use camouflage and close-quarters-combat
(CQC) to get his way through the mission. He also faces crocodiles, a complete
slut, a bisexual Russian, a guy who fucking controls bees, and a hand gesturing
teenager while taking orders from a guy whose gets his first codename from a
David Bowie song. All of this in a cinematic package that's visually stunning
for the PlayStation 2.
Despite a few hiccups with CQC being awkward to control, camouflage being annoying,
and hunting hindering your gameplay it's pretty expansive of what was seen from
Sons of Liberty and gives a survivalist feeling to Snake Eater. The story on
the other hand is decent at best, with the bosses, The Cobra Unit, being composed
of a bunch of guys who keep on repeating their name like some kind of fucking
Pokemon.
Snake Eater was re-released on the PlayStation 2 as Subsistence. with the ability to switch back-and-forth
between the traditional top-down camera and a new modern third-dimensional camera
controlled by the player. A second disc titled "Persistence" was added which
included the first installment to Metal Gear Online using the Subsistence game
engine as well as retranslated ports of the MSX2 classic Metal Gear titles among
other things to delight fans.
Despite the successes of Snake Eater, it did not meet sales expectations. While
Sons of Liberty's sales made Konami force another installment to the series,
Snake Eater's "failure" did the very same except seemingly with an emphasis
on the western market, online gameplay, and "what gamers want," spawning Metal
Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Snake
Eater very well might be the last Metal Gear title of it's kind.
