METAL GEAR SOLID
While Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake was a breakthrough of the series, the fact
is that nobody gave a shit about it. Sorry. Not wanting it to all go to waste,
Kojima planned on Metal Gear 3 for the 3DO in 1994.
Too bad nobody gave a shit about the 3DO. Instead of stubbornly developing yet
another game on a dead format the new Metal gear game was destined for the Sony
PlayStation. What would eventually be titled Metal gear Solid (as in "3D") was
developed with the goal of being "BEST PLAYSTATION GAEM EVAR."
Despite the gameplay being similar to a 1990 8-bit game and the voice acting
being as good as 1994's Snatcher for SEGA CD, the fact is that since nobody
paid attention to those titles, Metal Gear Solid was fucking king and ultimately
put the Metal Gear series in the mainstream ever since.
The game was re-released as Integral in Japan while the west received the third
disc of the Integral package as VR Missions (Special Missions in Europe). Integral
was released in the west as a Windows PC game which boasted of "better graphics"
even though all it did was increase the resolution of the original game to the
point where snowflakes look like giant squares.
For some odd reason it was decided that Metal Gear Solid must be on the Nintendo
GameCube. This was such an important project that Konami outsourced the development
to Silicon Knights which was a second-party developer at the time. Hideo Kojima
also had action film director Ryűhei Kitamura direct the cutscenes which features
backflips, bullet time, and a very angry Solid Snake. The gameplay was inconsistent
with the cutscenes while the newly recorded audio features bouncy techno and
some voice actors who most likely evoked more emotion during their sleep.
The tale of Solid Snake going to Alaska to spread a genetically-targeted virus
wasn't done with the remake though. It was then turned into a series of comics
illustrated by Ashley Wood (which was released as "Digital Graphic Novel" on
the Sony PSP) as well as a novel by Raymond Benson that seemed to be aimed at
the "young adult" crowd as it featured Snake making bad one-liners. I guess
it's time to accept the fact that Hideo Kojima has sold out when an official
novelization of Metal Gear Solid has Snake respond to an inquiry about him measuring
up to Big Boss with, "I didn't bring my RULER!"
