METAL GEAR ACID
The second handheld Metal Gear ever took a random turn into turn-based gaming.
Instead of using a directional pad or control stick to directly move Snake,
players have to wait their turn and then use cards to move a certain number
of spaces, among other things.
What the fuck? Who thought of this? Were they on Acid? Perhaps. If so, they
should certainly keep on hitting that LSD because this game manages to be completely
off the wall yet remain Metal Gear.
Asides from Solid Snake and the hundreds of cards themselves which depict characters,
weapons, items from Kojima games from all the way to 1987, the game has players
try to avoid any conflict until they build up their deck with some mean cards
to blast through stages--very similar to any Metal Gear game. Stealth is very
serious because if you have a weaksauce deck and you get caught, you are most
likely fucked especially during the brutal stages near the end.
The game was popular enough to warrant a green-light for a sequel which improved
the gameplay and also had a bizarre storyline that doesn't intrude on the canon
Metal Gear storyline. It was then remade for mobile phones in sprite form and
"3D" although obviously tons of features from the PSP original were stripped--most
of the good ones, unfortunately. Overall, Acid it's a fun detour from the typical
Metal Gear title... well, at least the PSP title.
