METAL GEAR: GHOST BABEL
Despite being named "Metal Gear Solid" in the west by marketing executives
in the west who had dollar signs in their eyes, this is definitely NOT Metal
Gear Solid. (Seriously, couldn't they have at least tacked "GHOST BABEL" at
the end of that?) It is in fact an entirely new game that takes place in a parallel
universe after the original Metal Gear with Big Boss actually dying--thus, Metal
Gear 2: Solid Snake doesn't happen which means Metal Gear Solid won't happen.
Time paradox much?
Regardless it being non-canon, this is still a must-play for a Metal Gear game.
The gameplay is very much like Metal Gear Solid with only some 3D features such
as the Stinger missile launcher and sniping missing. The storyline is still
very gratifying with a few things thrown in to throw the player off. Sure you
don't see animated sprite art during it's cutscenes but you still get what the
fuck is happening.
In face of it's small size the game has a shit ton of VR Missions to guarantee
replay value. Even though it was rated "E" for "Everyone" by the ESRB in North
America and had the cigarettes renamed as a "FOGGER," the game retains the series'
adult feel though it's likely to have been toned down further or rated "T" for
"Teens" nowadays due to stricter guidelines. This is not your little brother's
Metal Gear is all I'm saying.
Unfortunately, while Ghost Babel introduced new concepts such as mission-to-mission
somewhat-linear gameplay that is seen in later titles in the series, it is currently
the last "classic style" Metal Gear series. While it proved that a top-down
2D Metal Gear game can still be as exceptional as the "Solid" titles it's only
legacy is a cameo reference in Sons of Liberty and Guns of the Patriots. Too
bad everyone else is too concerned about the number of polygons in Solid Snake's
mustache to notice.
